How long is normal bleeding after IUD insertion? What are the symptoms?

The IUD is also called the contraceptive ring. It is an advanced contraceptive method for women. It is an effective measure to install a ring-shaped object directly in the fallopian tube or cervix to prevent sperm from entering. However, having an IUD inserted is not that simple, because there is an adaptation period after the insertion and some abnormal symptoms will appear. For example, how long is the normal bleeding after the insertion? What are the symptoms?

1. Bleeding: Most women will experience a small amount of bleeding 3-4 days after wearing the IUD. Generally, no treatment is required and the bleeding will heal within a week after wearing the IUD.

2. Increased menstrual volume: In the early stage of wearing the ring, especially in the first three months, some women will have varying degrees of increase in menstrual volume, or prolonged menstrual period, or irregular spotting. Generally, it will get better naturally after three months. If the menstrual volume increases by 1-2 times compared to before the ring is inserted, or the irregular bleeding lasts for a long time, anemia may have occurred, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

3. Lower abdominal pain or back pain: After wearing the ring, a few women will experience mild lower abdominal pain or back pain. After a short period of adaptation, the symptoms will disappear on their own. If severe pain occurs in the lower abdomen, it may be due to intrauterine and pelvic infection, displacement or incarceration of the contraceptive ring, ectopic pregnancy, etc. You should go to the hospital for detailed examination and treatment as soon as possible.

4. Increased vaginal discharge: If you wear a contraceptive ring with a tail string, the long-term contact and friction of the tail string on the cervical membrane may cause a significant increase in cervical secretions, that is, increased vaginal discharge. Similarly, a contraceptive ring without a tail string can also act as a foreign body, stimulating the endometrium and causing increased secretions. After a period of time, when the endometrial tissue has fully adapted, the vaginal discharge will naturally decrease. If shortly after wearing the ring, not only does the amount of vaginal discharge increase significantly, but also yellow purulent discharge appears, and is accompanied by body-wide fever, lower abdominal pain and other discomforts, it is very likely that an infection has occurred and you need to seek medical attention immediately.

5. Infection: A small number of people have developed infection. The reasons are mostly due to failure to pay attention to cleanliness after the placement of the IUD, or a history of genital tract inflammation, or premature sexual intercourse after the placement of the IUD, frequent sexual life, and many sexual partners, which can cause infection. After antibiotic treatment, the infection can generally be effectively controlled.
