Can chronic cervicitis turn into cancer?

Can chronic cervicitis turn into cancer?

Female patients with chronic cervicitis are very scared, fearing that the cervicitis may turn into cancer! In fact, chronic cervicitis is a benign gynecological disease and generally will not turn into cancer, so women should not worry too much. Current scientific research has found that cervical cancer is mainly caused by highly pathogenic HPV infection. Of course, for patients with chronic cervicitis, timely treatment is also necessary to avoid continued harm to health.

First of all, we need to make it clear that chronic cervicitis is just an inflammatory disease of the reproductive tract and a very common gynecological disease. According to the pathological type, it is clinically divided into cervical polyps, cervical hypertrophy, cervical erosion, cervical glandular cysts and cervical mucositis, etc. These conditions can exist alone or simultaneously in the same person.

Chronic cervicitis is caused by bacterial pathogens. The bacteria enter the cervical tissue through the cervical wound and cause inflammation. It is acute at first, but if not treated in time, it will develop into chronic inflammation.

In the past, cervicitis and cervical erosion were indeed considered precancerous lesions. But now, cervical cancer has been confirmed to be caused by persistent infection with high-risk HPV, so from this point of view, the pathogenic factors of chronic cervicitis are different from those of cervical cancer, so it will not develop into cancer.

Cervical erosion increases the incidence of cervical cancer

Cancer prevention survey data show that cervical erosion is a high-risk factor for cervical cancer. The risk of cervical cancer in people without erosion is 0.39%, while the risk of cervical cancer in people with cervical erosion is 2.05%.

Experts say that because the resistance of the cervical columnar epithelium is low, if the cervix is eroded, it is more susceptible to virus invasion and inflammation. This virus includes the HPV virus. It can be seen that women with cervical erosion are more likely to be infected with HPV, so the risk of cancer will increase.

Wei Lihui clearly pointed out that although chronic cervicitis does not necessarily develop into cervical cancer, many precancerous lesions clinically manifest as cervical erosion. Therefore, if cervical erosion or chronic cervicitis is found, timely treatment should be sought to reduce the possibility of cancer as much as possible.

Under what circumstances will chronic cervicitis turn into cancer?

In fact, chronic cervicitis is a benign lesion and most cases will not turn into cancer.

However, under the influence of some bad living habits and sexually transmitted diseases, cracks may appear in the cervix. These tiny injuries accelerate the invasion of viruses, some of which become precancerous lesions and even develop into cervical cancer.
