Can I have sex if I have Bartholinitis?

Generally, patients with Bartholinitis are prohibited from having sex, because Bartholinitis, also known as Bartholin's gland cyst, will have symptoms of accumulation of secretions. If you have sex, you will feel uncomfortable and may be infected with bacteria.

1. Bartholinitis is an inflammation of the Bartholin's glands, which are located in the deep 1/3 of the lower labia majora on both sides. Their diameter is about 0.5-1.0 cm, and their exit ducts are about 15-2.0 cm long. The gland opening is located on the inner side of the labia minora near the hymen. Under the stimulation of sexual intercourse, mucus is secreted for lubrication. Due to the specific anatomical location, pathogens can easily invade and cause Bartholinitis. During the acute stage of Bartholinitis, there is pain in the vulva, and local redness, swelling, heat and pain may be seen on the lower part of one side of the labia. The opening of the gland duct is sometimes blocked by swelling or exudate, and pus cannot be discharged, accumulating to form an abscess.

2. After suppuration, there will be fever and increased pain. The abscess may sometimes rupture on its own and pus will flow out. When the rupture is large and the pus drainage is smooth, the inflammation will subside and heal quickly; but when the rupture is small and the acute inflammation disappears, the pus turns into clear liquid and forms a cyst, which is called a Bartholin's gland cyst. There are many things that women with acute Bartholin's glanditis need to pay attention to. So, can women with acute Bartholin's glanditis have sex? Women with acute Bartholin's glanditis cannot have sex.

3. In case of acute inflammation, you need to rest and avoid sexual intercourse. Use antibiotics appropriately. Local hot compresses, sitz baths or other heat therapies can be applied. After an abscess is formed, it can be incised and drained. If a cyst is formed due to chronic inflammation, different methods can be adopted depending on the severity: if the cyst is small and asymptomatic, no treatment is required; when the cyst is large or recurs, Bartholin's gland cyst incision or cyst removal should be performed. Currently, most people advocate ostomy because it is a simpler method, causes less damage, and can restore glandular function after surgery.

4. The Bartholin's glands are located at the back of the labia majora on both sides, and the gland ducts open on the inner side of the labia minora close to the hymen. Due to the characteristics of the anatomical location, when the vulva is contaminated by sexual intercourse, childbirth or other situations, pathogens can easily penetrate and cause inflammation. Therefore, once symptoms of acute Bartholinitis appear, you must not have sexual intercourse to avoid aggravating the condition.
