What is Bartholinitis and what are its symptoms?

The main cause of Bartholinitis is the blockage of the Bartholin's gland duct, which leads to the accumulation of secretions. The symptoms of Bartholin's glanditis are also quite obvious. The vulva may feel heavy and swollen, or you may feel very uncomfortable during sexual intercourse.

The Bartholin's glands are located at the back of the labia majora on both sides, and the glandular ducts open on the inner side of the labia minora near the hymen. Due to the anatomical characteristics of the disease site, when the vulva is contaminated by sexual intercourse, childbirth or other situations, pathogens can easily penetrate and cause inflammation. Bartholin's gland inflammation is an inflammation caused by infection with various pathogens. If not treated promptly, it will cause acute suppurative inflammation and become Bartholin's gland abscess. This disease is more common in women of childbearing age.

What are the symptoms of a Bartholin's gland cyst?

① If the cyst is small and not infected, the patient may have no symptoms and it is often discovered during a gynecological examination. If the cyst is large, the patient may feel a sense of heaviness and swelling in the vulva or discomfort during sexual intercourse.

② Examination shows that the cysts are mostly unilateral but can also be bilateral. Examination showed that the epidermis appeared normal. The cyst was located at the location of the Bartholin's gland between the posterior and inferior part of the pubic region and the frenulum of the pubic region. It was semi-lunar, oval or round in shape. The cyst was obviously raised on the outside of the greater pubic region, and the minor pubic region on the affected side was flattened. The cyst is mobile and not tender. When sexual activity is frequent, the cyst will rapidly increase in size. In case of secondary infection, local redness, swelling and pain are obvious, the patient has systemic symptoms such as fever, and the cyst may develop into an abscess.

③ Unilateral cystic tumor at the lower end of the vulva of women of childbearing age, with no obvious subjective symptoms, mucus on puncture, and the characteristic of sexual stimulation affecting its size. Pathological examination can confirm the diagnosis. The cyst is generally not difficult to diagnose based on its location, appearance, or the lack of local signs of inflammation. Local puncture can be performed when necessary, and its contents can be differentiated from Bartholin's glanditis, abscess, lymphedema, etc.
