Does a cold affect the sugar screening?

Does a cold affect the sugar screening?

In order to ensure good birth and good upbringing, pregnant women need to do various relevant tests before giving birth. Because pregnant women are more likely to suffer from gestational hyperglycemia, it is also necessary to do a sugar screening test during pregnancy. If a pregnant woman has a fever or a cold, will it affect the sugar screening?

Does fever and cold affect sugar screening?

Fever and cold affect sugar screening, so it is not suitable to do sugar screening during fever and cold period. Common problems of sugar screening are:

1. Reduce the intake of cassava starch (pasta) and sugar two weeks before the test. Try to avoid taking regular meals, and the amount of each meal should be less than 2 taels (i.e. eat less noodles, bean noodles, etc. The regular meal should not exceed 500 grams a day). It is best not to drink rice porridge in the morning, you can use milk instead.

Do not eat high-fat foods, and try not to eat sugary foods. Sugary foods here refer to desserts, drinks, and even fruits containing refined sugar that can be directly absorbed by the body without any conversion, such as: chocolate, coca-cola, lychee, sugarcane, a lot of melons, etc.

The intake of fruits should be limited, especially those with high sugar content (fruits should be changed to those with low sugar content such as kiwi, loofah, tomato, etc. and should be eaten in between meals). Don't eat raw eggs for dinner.

Eat more vegetables, no less than 500 grams per day, to supplement vitamins and methylcellulose. Drink plenty of water and exercise appropriately. Take a walk after meals to burn off excess sugar.

2. The day before the sugar screening or glucose tolerance test, it is best to eat light vegetarian meals and eat less white rice. Make stir-fried bitter melon to lower blood lipids.

3. Don’t eat after 8 o’clock at night the day before yesterday, and drink less water.

4. Don't drink granulated sugar too fast, drink it slowly, little by little, don't drink it in one gulp, drink it within 3-5 minutes. It is best to walk more after drinking, so that there will be a certain amount of energy consumption within an hour, which will help reduce blood sugar levels.

5. Grasp the time for blood test, start from one hour after drinking. If you start drinking at 7:10 and finish drinking at 7:20, you have to draw again at 8:20.

How much is the sugar screening standard worth?

In the morning on an empty stomach, dissolve 50 grams of glucose in 250 ml of water and drink it all at once, then measure your blood sugar after 1 hour. For those with blood sugar index ≥7.8mmol/L, a glucose screening (OGTT) is required to confirm the diagnosis. 100 grams of glucose should be dissolved in 300ml of water and drunk within 5 minutes. The test result is based on the measurement of venous blood. According to the diagnostic criteria recommended by the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) of the United Kingdom, blood sugar level 5.8mmol/L, 1-hour blood sugar level 10.6mmol/L, 2-hour blood sugar level 9.2mmol/L, 3-hour blood sugar level 8.1mmol/L. If two or more of the values are greater than or equal to the above standards, GDM is diagnosed. When any of the 4 values of the OGTT diagnostic criteria is reached or exceeded and is abnormal, it can be diagnosed as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

For groups with high-risk factors for diabetes, such as those with a family history of diabetes, a body mass index over 24, a history of hypertension, a history of GDM in the last pregnancy, and pregnant women giving birth to a macrosomic fetus, sugar screening should be performed during the face-to-face consultation, and the screening can be repeated once during the 30th to 32nd week of pregnancy.
