Can I have an abortion if I have a scarred uterus? Is it dangerous?

A scarred uterus actually refers to a woman's uterine scar that is relatively large. This is mainly caused by a caesarean section, but can also be caused by uterine fibroid surgery. It is usually not easy for patients to get pregnant. If they become pregnant, uterine rupture is likely to occur, and they may have an abortion.

1. Can I have an abortion if I have a scarred uterus?

For those who are considering abortion, the presence of uterine scars and adhesions to surrounding tissues may cause changes in the position and morphological characteristics of the uterus. It causes complications such as incomplete abortion and uterine perforation. The use of mifepristone combined with misoprostol to terminate early pregnancy in scarred uterus is safe, effective and feasible.

2. Harm of uterine scar

Generally speaking, if you do not plan to get pregnant again, a scarred uterus will not cause much harm. However, if you become pregnant again, the following three dangerous situations are likely to occur.

1. Harm in early pregnancy: If the placenta implants at the scar of the last cesarean section (i.e. incisional pregnancy), it is easy to cause uterine rupture. It is best to terminate the pregnancy at this time.

2. Hazards in mid-pregnancy: The second situation is that when the incisional pregnancy is not terminated in time, the embryo grows bigger and bigger and passes through the scar, which can directly lead to the risk of uterine rupture.

3. Hazards in late pregnancy: About 28 weeks after pregnancy, the placenta may move to the scar and penetrate deep into the uterus. This is medically known as pernicious placenta previa. It is very difficult to treat clinically and often requires hysterectomy, which can lead to the risk of maternal death.

4. Dangers of childbirth: For mothers with scarred uterus, if the scar is torn during childbirth, it is easy to cause uterine rupture and postpartum hemorrhage. If not treated in time, it may endanger the life of the mother.
