What causes bleeding gums after childbirth?

There are many reasons for women's postpartum bleeding gums, such as certain blood system diseases, thrombocytopenia, anemia, hemophilia, etc. In addition, some local irritants can cause postpartum gum bleeding, such as suddenly eating a lot of spicy food, which can cause the capillaries around the gums to dilate. If these capillaries are accidentally punctured when brushing your teeth, it can also cause gum bleeding.

There are many reasons for bleeding gums, and it is one of the common symptoms of oral diseases. It is generally divided into two types: local and systemic. Gingival bleeding caused by local reasons is common in patients with gingivitis and periodontitis. These patients develop tartar at the gum line because they do not brush their teeth regularly or because of incorrect brushing techniques. Tartar is a hard, lime-like substance that irritates the gums and can cause inflammation, swelling, and congestion of the gums. In mild cases, the gums may bleed when brushing, sucking, biting hard objects, or picking your teeth. In severe cases, the gums may bleed even with slight or no stimulation. If inflammation or high fever causes changes in the vascular structure of the gum tissue, bleeding may also occur. Bleeding gums caused by oral diseases are more common in gingivitis and periodontitis. In addition, ill-fitting dentures, food impaction, periodontal damage, etc. can all cause bleeding gums. Some will leave bleeding marks on the toothbrush.

Some gingival bleeding is caused by systemic diseases. This type of gingival bleeding is often one of the clinical symptoms of systemic diseases. It is helpful for the diagnosis of systemic diseases, and treatment should also be done with special caution.

Another common reason for bleeding gums after childbirth is that some women are superstitious about confinement. They do not touch any cold water or even brush their teeth during the confinement period after childbirth. This can easily lead to tooth decay, and bacteria are more likely to grow in the gums, leading to infection and bleeding gums. Therefore, women should actively maintain oral hygiene after giving birth and must brush their teeth every day.
