Can a pregnant woman breastfeed while lying down?

We know that during breastfeeding, the baby's breastfeeding problem is worthy of people's attention. Some people would like to know more about breastfeeding issues for new mothers, for example, can new mothers breastfeed while lying down? As we all know, there are many ways for new mothers to breastfeed. Generally, they feed while standing and holding the baby, but there are also scenes of breastfeeding while lying down. But is this way of breastfeeding while lying down a good idea? Will it cause poor feeding for the baby? For example, being choked. In addition, will it cause the baby's respiratory organs to be blocked, resulting in breathing difficulties? These are all issues worth exploring.

1. Harm to dental health: When the baby lies in the mother's arms to drink milk, the front teeth are almost completely immersed in milk. If the baby falls asleep accidentally, the milk in the mouth will stay too long and erode the teeth. Over time, the teeth corroded by milk are very likely to decalcify, causing tooth decay in babies, and even developing complications such as pulpitis and periodontal abscesses, which in turn affect the development of permanent teeth and physical health.

2. Facial ugliness and disharmony: forming an overbite and becoming ugly. Many parents adopt the lying position to breastfeed. This feeding position has its particularity. If this position is adopted for a long time, the lower jaw will protrude too far forward, which may cause developmental abnormalities such as "overbite" and "underbite", a sunken nose root, a slightly protruding chin, and a sunken middle face. This will affect the "overall layout" of your baby's face. Parents should pay attention to this.

3. Induce ear canal diseases: The oto-pharynx builds a bridge between the nasopharyngeal tube and the middle ear. The Eustachian tube of infants and young children is relatively delicate. Not only is it short, but it also opens spontaneously when they swallow milk. When parents feed their children while lying down, they actually increase the pressure on the child's middle ear, which may cause water accumulation, induce infection, and affect the development of hearing.

It is best to feed your baby in a sitting position.

1. Before breastfeeding, the mother can find a chair with a backrest so that the mother's back will not be so sore when breastfeeding. You can also prepare a small stool in advance. By putting your feet on the stool, you can raise your thighs and bring the baby's head closer to the mother's breast.

2. Place the baby on your lap, with the baby's head resting on the inside of the mother's arm and the baby's back supported by the wrist. Hold up your breast with your hands, squeeze out a few drops of old milk, use the nipple to stimulate the skin around the baby's mouth, and when the baby opens his mouth, put the nipple and part of the areola into the baby's mouth. Then use your fingers to press the breasts, which will make sucking easier without pressing on the baby's nose.

3. After feeding, do not put the baby back to bed directly. Instead, place the baby's body upright with his head resting on the mother's shoulder. Pat and stroke the back gently to expel swallowed air.

We know that in certain specific situations or when protective measures are relatively complete, mothers can breastfeed while lying down, and this also has certain benefits. For example, mothers can take a proper rest without having to exert too much effort, thus saving energy. In addition, babies can eat calmly without worrying about choking. However, it should be noted that the mother or caregiver should pay close attention to the baby's condition to avoid suffocation or choking.
