How long is normal for postpartum lochia to be discharged?

Many women who have experienced childbirth know that there will be a period of time after childbirth when some menstrual-like secretions will be discharged. This is a necessary process for every woman who has given birth. However, few women know how long it takes for lochia to be discharged? What kind of lochia needs to attract our attention as women, and what kind of lochia indicates some diseases in the female body? Let me tell you about it below.

How long does it take for a woman to have lochia after giving birth? Normally speaking, the lochia will be discharged about 20 days after delivery.

Normal lochia has a bloody smell, but it is not smelly. The total amount is about 500 to 1,000 ml. Generally speaking, lochia will clear up in about 3 weeks after delivery.

After one week to half a month, the amount of blood in the lochia decreases, and there are more necrotic decidua, cervical mucus, vaginal secretions and bacteria, which makes the lochia turn into light red serous fluid. The lochia at this time is called serous lochia.

After half a month to within 3 weeks, the lochia no longer contains blood, but contains a large number of white blood cells, degenerated decidua, epidermal cells and bacteria, making the lochia viscous and white in color, so it is called white lochia. White lochia can last for two to three weeks.

During the postpartum period, the weight of the uterus will decrease from 1,000 grams to 50-60 grams, and its volume will continue to shrink, returning to its pre-pregnancy size after 6 weeks.

The quality of uterine involution can be estimated from the descent of the uterine fundus and the condition of lochia. Some women have continuous lochia, and even at the "full moon" there is still a lot of bloody secretions with a foul odor. The women themselves feel pain in the lower abdomen and back pain. When checked 6 weeks after delivery, the uterus has not returned to its normal size and is soft and tender, all of which are manifestations of incomplete uterine involution.

Some lochia is abnormal and should be paid attention to:

Two weeks after delivery, the lochia is still bloody, large in amount, and accompanied by a foul odor. Sometimes, it excretes rotten meat-like substances or fetal membrane-like substances. The uterus is poorly restored. At this time, you should consider that there may be residual placenta or fetal membranes in the uterus. Heavy bleeding may occur at any time, and you should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment immediately.

In general, bloody lochia lasts up to 3 days, and serous lochia lasts about 20 days.

The above is what the editor introduced to you about some situations regarding postpartum lochia in parturients. In fact, due to different personal physical conditions, the discharge of lochia is not so accurate. What we need to do is to relax, actively cooperate with the doctor's follow-up care, discover abnormal conditions in time, report to the doctor in time and receive treatment.
