What to do if your wrist joints hurt during the confinement period?

For many women, the confinement period after giving birth is a very important stage. If I don’t take good care of my body, I may suffer from some diseases for the rest of my life. Many women have reported that they often feel pain in the wrist joints during the confinement period. What is the reason and how can we treat and relieve it? Today, the editor will help you solve this problem. Let’s find out quickly!

This condition is carpal tunnel syndrome. 10% of women will develop carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy and after childbirth. The specific manifestations are: numbness of fingers, sometimes the hands cannot be clenched, lack of strength, slightly swollen hands and feet, dull pain in the wrist joints, and the pain feels similar to rheumatic symptoms but is not rheumatism. Generally all symptoms disappear after delivery or some time after delivery.

The reasons are:

(1) Nerve compression. During pregnancy, there is an overall increase in the amount of water circulating in the body. Therefore, the ligaments in the wrist and other parts become edematous, compressing the nerve channel that controls the fingers, the median nerve, causing numbness and pain, which causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

(2) Vitamin B12 deficiency. Lack of this vitamin can cause peripheral nerve disorders and lead to numbness and pain in the joints.

(3) Traditional Chinese medicine believes that postpartum joint pain is related to postpartum blood deficiency, blood stasis, or retention of wind, cold and dampness. If blood is deficient, the limbs, tendons, veins and joints will not be nourished; if blood is stagnant, the circulation of qi and blood will be blocked; if wind, cold and dampness invade the body and stay between the skin, meridians and joints, blocking the circulation of qi and blood, all of which can cause postpartum joint pain.

There are many solutions to carpal tunnel syndrome. First, since it is caused by edema, the diet should be light and low in salt. Second, supplement vitamin B12. Third, do not over-move your wrists and fingers. Fourth, hot compresses can relieve pain, but do not use pain-relieving elastic bandages. Bandages will obstruct blood circulation and increase pain. Fifth: If you do not need to breastfeed after giving birth, you can try Chinese medicine. If it is caused by blood deficiency, it will manifest as limb joint pain, numbness, accompanied by dizziness and palpitations. You can use Astragalus and Cinnamon Twig Five Ingredients Decoction (astragalus, cinnamon twig, white peony root, ginger, jujube) with Chinese angelica, Millettia reticulata, Gentiana macrophylla and Saposhnikovia divaricata. If it is blood stasis, it will manifest as tingling in the joints, which will be more painful when pressed, a small amount of dark lochia, and lower abdominal pain that refuses to be pressed. You can use Shenghua Tang (Danggui, Chuanxiong, Peach Kernel, Paojiang, and Zhigancao) with cinnamon and Achyranthes bidentata. If it is caused by wind, cold and dampness, it will manifest as joint pain and difficulty in flexion and extension. If wind is strong, the pain will wander. If cold is strong, the cold pain will be severe, and the patient will be afraid of wind and cold. If dampness is strong, the joints will feel heavy. You can use Duhuo Jishe Tang (Duhuo, Viscum album, Gentiana macrophylla, Saposhnikovia divaricata, Asarum, Danggui, White Peony Root, Dry Rehmannia Glutinosa, Cassia bark, Poria, Eucommia ulmoides, Ginseng, Achyranthes bidentata, and Licorice) for treatment.
