Severe coughing and urinary incontinence in late pregnancy

Severe coughing and urinary incontinence in late pregnancy

Severe coughing and urinary incontinence in the late pregnancy are caused by excessive urethral pressure. The excess amniotic fluid will increase abdominal pressure, causing urine leakage. In addition, in the late pregnancy, the contraction ability of the pelvic floor muscles becomes weaker, making the bladder more susceptible to urinary incontinence. If a pregnant woman has a severe cough and is also suffering from urinary incontinence, she should go to the hospital for treatment in time. The symptoms can be relieved through diet therapy.

Why does a pregnant woman cough and can't hold her urine?

Pregnant women who cannot hold their urine due to coughing are suffering from stress urinary incontinence, especially in the late pregnancy when pregnant women have more amniotic fluid and the pressure in the abdomen increases. Urine will leak out when coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting heavy objects. When the urethra moves out of its normal position (prolapses) due to weakened pelvic floor muscles, the function used to keep the bladder outlet closed becomes weakened, resulting in stress urinary incontinence. It is normal for pregnant women to cough and be unable to hold their urine, but if the cough lasts for a long time, it is better for pregnant women to seek treatment early.

What to do if a pregnant woman coughs

Coughing constantly during pregnancy is a painful experience that many expectant mothers have had. They hold their stomachs and dare not cough hard, for fear that the baby will come early. It is even more embarrassing if they cough to the point of urinary incontinence. Therefore, coughing during pregnancy is a symptom that troubles pregnant women and obstetricians. If you cough too much or too violently, abdominal pressure will increase, which may lead to miscarriage or premature birth.

Why do pregnant women cough constantly? One possible reason is a cold, so the treatment is the same as treating a cold.

Just like a common cold. But don't be too smart and take over-the-counter medicine (both Chinese and Western medicine) indiscriminately, because some Chinese and Western medicines for treating coughs may have an impact on the fetus. If you want treatment, you must go to the hospital to see a doctor so as not to harm the fetus.

However, some pregnant women's coughs are not caused by colds. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these expectant mothers originally have a relatively weak yin constitution. They will start coughing as soon as they become pregnant and will continue to cough until the fetus is born, greatly damaging the health of the fetus. The treatment method at this time is different from that of cough caused by cold, and must focus on stopping cough, nourishing yin and moistening the lungs. Here are some long-standing folk dietary treatments for coughs.

1. Stewed pears with rock sugar: Peel the fresh pears, split them in half and remove the cores. Add appropriate amount of rock sugar and steam them in a pot until soft.

2. Bake oranges: Use chopsticks to make a hole in the center of the bottom of the orange, stuff some salt in it, wrap it with aluminum foil, and bake it in the oven for 15-20 minutes. After taking it out, peel the orange peel and eat it while it is hot. Or you can dry the orange peel into dried tangerine peel, add water to make tea, and drink it in big gulps. It has amazing effects.

3. Stewed pear with Fritillaria cirrhosa: Use peeled and cored fresh pears, add 2 grams of Fritillaria cirrhosa powder, steam in a pot until soft, and eat while hot.

4. White radish candy: Cut the white radish into 1 cm dices, put it in a dry, clean container, fill it with honey, cover it tightly, soak it for about 3 days, the water will seep out and mix with the honey, store it in the refrigerator; scoop out a little each time and add warm water to drink, it has a very good cough-relieving effect. If you want to drink it suddenly and don’t have time to soak it, you can grind the white radish, add 1/3 amount of honey, mix well, and then add warm water to drink.

5. Sugar-boiled kumquats: Wash the kumquats, poke two or three holes with a toothpick, add water to cover them and bring to a boil, add rock sugar, simmer over low heat, and eat while hot. Let the unfinished drink cool down and store in the refrigerator. Scoop some out each time and eat it warm.

6. Do not eat sweets such as candies and biscuits. Cold, dry foods that can easily cause inflammation, such as peanuts, melon seeds, fried foods, etc. should also be avoided.

7. Drink more warm water. Holding warm water in your mouth also has a good cough-relieving effect.

The above cough-relieving dietary therapy can be taken several times a day. It is effective for pregnant women and the general public (including adults and children). You may want to give it a try.
