Can I breastfeed if I have a fever?

During breastfeeding, mothers are usually most worried about affecting the quality of breast milk due to their own physical conditions. Sometimes, it is inevitable to have a fever or a cold. Although a cold or a fever can be cured by taking medicine, breastfeeding is a special period. Many mothers are worried that if they continue to breastfeed with a fever, it will affect the baby's health and the growth and development of the baby. Can you breastfeed with a fever?

Can I breastfeed when I have a fever?

You can breastfeed if you have a low fever during breastfeeding, but stop if it exceeds 37.7 degrees Celsius. If it is a low fever, try to take medicine after breastfeeding.

If a doctor in a regular hospital finds out that you are breastfeeding, the medicine he prescribes should be safe for you. You should drink more warm water and you don't have to stop breastfeeding. Don't be afraid even if the fever has not subsided. You can breastfeed your baby when the fever is low, but not when the fever is high.

People with mild cold symptoms do not need special treatment and can heal on their own. If there are more severe symptoms such as cough and fever, medication should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Generally, antiviral oral liquid, isatis root granules, penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics can be used for treatment. Wear a mask when breastfeeding; breastfeed before taking the medicine, and stop breastfeeding within 4-6 hours after taking the medicine to avoid the peak drug concentration in the blood;

When the baby has a fever and the body temperature is ≥38℃, breastfeeding should be temporarily stopped, and milking should be performed more than 3 times a day to maintain the lactation state of the breasts. Keep the baby's room well ventilated to reduce the concentration of influenza virus in the air; if necessary, let the baby leave the bedroom temporarily, boil 1-2 pounds of vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, and seal and fumigate the room for 4-6 hours.

If a breastfeeding mother receives medication injections, she should interrupt breastfeeding for a few days.

After delivery, you should strengthen your nutrition and enhance your resistance. Eat more millet and eggs, fish soup, big bone soup, pig's trotter soup and other milk-producing foods, which are good for your body and the baby. Mothers should avoid getting angry and getting irritated, as these may lead to illness, so they should stay in a good mood.

How to deal with fever during breastfeeding

1. You should wear a mask when breastfeeding

It is best for mothers to wear a mask when breastfeeding their babies. Although germs or viruses will not be transmitted to the baby through breast milk, it is necessary to avoid passing cold viruses or bacteria to the baby through breathing and droplets.

2. Wash your hands carefully

Mothers should also pay attention to personal hygiene. Their hands will inevitably come into contact with the baby. Therefore, mothers with colds should wash their hands frequently and only touch the baby's clothes or skin after washing their hands.

3. Replenish water and pay attention to nutrition

In order to keep breast milk flowing smoothly, mothers with a cold should drink more water than usual. At the same time, pay attention to nutritional supplements.

If you have a fever during breastfeeding, you should not take antipyretics to treat it, because the antipyretics will be passed into the breast milk, which will have side effects on the baby. If you have a fever during breastfeeding, you can use physical methods to reduce fever, or you can take Isatis root. Because isatis root will not cause too many side effects on babies.
