The IUD is a safe, effective, economical, highly efficient and reversible contraceptive measure, and is the main contraceptive method for pregnant women in my country. IUD mainly prevents sperm and egg from meeting. IUDs can prevent sperm from passing through the female reproductive system, reduce the possibility of sperm fertilizing the egg, and may also prevent sperm and egg from combining and embedding into the endometrium.

There are several generations of IUDs: the first generation is also called the inertial IUD, which has a metal spring or single ring, a three-dimensional double ring or a peach shape, and also has plastic or a plastic-metal mixture; the second generation is also called the specific IUD, which slowly releases copper, anti-inflammatory hemostatic drugs or estrogen, and has the specificity that the first generation lacks, further improving the actual effect of contraception. At present, the second-generation IUD is widely used in countries around the world.

Generally speaking, when an IUD is inserted, there will be a whole process of dilating the cervical canal. There may be mild pain during this process. After the position of the contraceptive ring is normal, the condition of the cervical canal will gradually recover, so the cervical opening will remain closed. And this process will not cause the cervix to relax. The contraceptive ring only exists inside the uterine cavity, preventing the embryo from implanting, thereby achieving the purpose of contraception. It will not affect other parts of the human body. (However, if a T-shaped contraceptive ring is used, it has a tail thread, which may cause certain damage to the cervical opening, but it will not be too serious.) The intrauterine contraceptive ring is inserted into the uterine cavity and has no significant effect on the cervix. It is not easy to cause the cervix to open.

Common problems after IUD insertion

1. Take a proper rest: After the ring is put in place, the cervix is relatively loose and the ring is easy to fall off, so you should rest for two days after the ring is put in. It is not suitable for physical labor or high-intensity activities within a week. When going to the toilet, try to avoid holding your breath too hard to prevent the ring from coming off due to a sudden increase in abdominal pressure.

2. Maintain hygiene: Ring placement is a surgical procedure. In order to prevent infection, keep the external vagina clean after the operation, wash the lower body with warm water and change underwear every night. Within two weeks, sexual intercourse (this requires close cooperation from the man) and bathing in a tub (but showering or sponge bathing is allowed) are strictly prohibited to maintain vaginal hygiene and avoid cross infection.

3. Pay attention to observation: within a few days after the placement of the ring (mainly the first three days), there may be a small amount of vaginal bleeding, mild lower abdominal discomfort (such as low back pain, etc.) and excessive leucorrhea (this is caused by surgical trauma or reflex compression of the contraceptive ring or rupture of small blood vessels in the uterine wall). Generally, it can disappear on its own and does not require treatment. If the bleeding is heavy or lasts for more than a week, especially if you have abdominal pain or fever, go to the hospital immediately.
