What are the symptoms of retrograde menstruation?

Generally speaking, women will have a heavier amount of menstrual blood when they first start menstruating, which is a normal phenomenon. As time goes by, the amount of menstrual blood will become less and less. However, in life, women's menstrual blood volume is sometimes too much, and sometimes it is obviously too little. The reasons behind this are very complicated. The most common ones are caused by some gynecological diseases. In addition, women may also experience retrograde menstruation, which can cause patients to have the following symptoms.

Symptoms of retrograde menstruation:

Retrograde menstruation leads the blood downward. With the arrival of puberty, girls begin to have monthly menstruation, which is a sign of the girl's development towards maturity. However, some girls always have nose bleeding before and after their menstrual period, or during their menstrual period. What is going on? Chinese people often call this phenomenon "reverse menstruation" or "retrograde menstruation". Women with this condition often have scanty menstruation or amenorrhea. Over time, it can cause menstrual cycle disorders or anemia. Could it be that the blood in the uterus really "flows back" into the nasal cavity? In fact, this kind of nosebleed that occurs at the same time as menstruation is medically called "compensatory menstruation."

This type of bleeding is not the blood in the uterus flowing back into the nasal cavity, but a peripheral extrauterine bleeding. Modern medicine believes that there is a definite connection between the nasal mucosa and the female reproductive organs. The olfactory nerves of some mammals are closely connected with the sexual center, so some scholars regard the nasal mucosa as a primitive component of the sexual organs. Certain specific areas of the nasal mucosa are very sensitive to estrogen secreted by the ovaries. Experimental studies have found that injecting estrogen into monkeys can cause their nasal mucosa to become congested and red, and their blood vessels to change. Some patients have premenstrual tension disorder, and their nasal mucosa may become overly congested, edematous, and have rhinorrhoea. Nosebleeds are a manifestation of aggravated changes. Normal menstruation is caused by the cyclical changes of estrogen, which causes the uterine mucosa to shrink, the arterioles to be extremely bent and contracted, the blood flow to the surface layer of the endometrium to stagnate, ischemia and necrosis, and even bleeding, thus forming menstruation. Because the nasal mucosa is sensitive to this hormonal change, the above-mentioned physiological changes also occur, which leads to the cycle of nosebleeds. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the syndrome of reverse menstruation, also known as reverse menstruation, is when there is ascending but no descending, and it is mostly caused by the deficiency of Yin in the lower part, which causes Yang to rush upward. It cannot be restored to its normal state unless heavy medicine is used to suppress the descent of the Yang.

In addition, in previous observations of retrograde menstruation, it was found that "compensatory menstruation" with the same nature as nosebleeds can also occur in the kidneys, intestines, bladder, lungs, pancreas, skin, external auditory canal, eyes and eyelids, but nosebleeds always account for the largest proportion, about more than one-third. The diagnosis of compensatory menstruation should not be abused. It is necessary to observe in detail whether bleeding and menstruation exist at the same time, whether there is only periodic nose bleeding without menstruation, and a regular nasal examination should be performed. Only when there is no lesion should this disease be considered.

For most patients with compensatory menstruation, their normal menstruation and compensatory menstruation occur at the same time. When they experience amenorrhea, they may experience lower abdominal distension and general discomfort. When compensatory menstruation (nosebleed) occurs, many symptoms will disappear. On weekdays, patients should keep a happy mood, avoid mental stimulation, and avoid spicy and cold foods, which can effectively prevent and treat retrograde menstruation.
