What to do if the cervix is loose during pregnancy

Never underestimate the problem of cervical relaxation during pregnancy, as it may lead to miscarriage. Once you find that your cervix is loose during pregnancy, you must deal with it promptly. If you want to be healthy, you need to make adequate preparations. So what should you do if your cervix becomes loose during pregnancy? Next, let’s take a look at the causes of cervical relaxation and how to deal with cervical relaxation during pregnancy.

Causes of cervical relaxation

Congenital

Congenital uterine isthmus dysplasia, one of the complications of uterine malformation. Congenital cervical relaxation is caused by the mother taking certain drugs during pregnancy or other reasons that lead to incomplete development of the female uterus; acquired cervical relaxation is caused by birth trauma, too many curettages or frequent perineal examinations.

The main clinical feature of congenital cervical relaxation is premature birth or miscarriage in every pregnancy.

Acquired

A small number of causes of cervical relaxation are sequelae of cervical laceration caused by birth injuries. Acquired uterine insufficiency is manifested by premature birth or miscarriage occurring at increasingly earlier times, or normal pregnancy and delivery at the beginning, but then premature birth or miscarriage occurs for some reason.

Short cervix

A short cervix may also be one of the causes of cervical relaxation. There are reports that when ultrasound examination shows a short cervix, the chances of miscarriage or premature birth in a pregnancy increase significantly. But it is possible to get through the pregnancy safely and give birth successfully. Moreover, the length of the cervix is affected by many factors, such as the ratio of cervical muscle and fiber. During pregnancy, as the uterus grows and stretches into the abdominal cavity, the cervix may also become shorter.

Once you find yourself in this situation, you must seek treatment in a timely manner and use the correct method to treat the cause, so that you can effectively treat the disease.

What should I do if my cervix becomes loose?

Taking medication

Cervical relaxation can be treated by taking medication, which can promote the tension of the uterine tube and will not have any abnormal effects on future fertility, allowing you to continue to become pregnant.

Cerclage

If medication alone is ineffective, surgery can be performed, mainly to strengthen the weak cervix through surgical sutures. Bleeding, uterine contractions, or premature rupture of membranes are contraindications to surgery. Generally, early miscarriage caused by other reasons often occurs before 14 weeks, so cervical cerclage should be performed after 14 weeks. There is no consensus on when to perform cerclage during pregnancy. The later the pregnancy, the greater the chance that surgery will result in miscarriage and premature rupture of membranes. Therefore, for women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, some doctors prefer conservative treatment with rest rather than cerclage. Generally, cerclage is no longer performed if the gestational age is greater than 24 to 26 weeks. Before performing a cerclage, an ultrasound scan should be performed to confirm that the fetus is alive and has no major malformations.
