What is right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma?

I don’t know if you have heard of right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. Right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma is a very serious disease that has a great impact on women’s physical, mental and fertility. So, do you know about this disease? Let me introduce to you the right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma.

Disease Overview

The contents of this tumor were previously called pseudocysts because they are soluble in acetic acid and are different from gastric mucus. In recent years, histochemical methods have confirmed that it is a complex of mucin, acetamidoglucose and other protein-bound carbohydrates. Because the contents of the cystic cavity of this type of tumor are characterized by rich albumin and glycoprotein (mucopolysaccharides), it is now commonly known as mucinous cystadenoma. The epithelium covering the glandular and cystic cavities of the tumor wall is similar to the endometrium or intestinal mucosa.

This type of tumor is quite common, accounting for about 15-25% of all ovarian tumors, and mucinous carcinoma accounts for 6-10% of all ovarian cancers. About 85% of all ovarian mucinous tumors are benign (mucinous cystadenomas), about 6% are borderline malignant (borderline mucinous cystadenocarcinomas), and about 9% are invasive carcinomas (mucinous cystadenocarcinomas). Mucinous cystadenomas are most common in patients aged 30 to 50 years, while borderline tumors and invasive carcinomas are most common in patients aged 40 to 70 years.

Among them, mucinous borderline cystadenocarcinoma accounts for 17-52% of ovarian mucinous carcinoma. 2-5% of patients with right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma have peritoneal myxoma, which is usually secondary to cyst rupture. Tumor cells implant in the peritoneum and form tumor nodules, producing a large amount of mucus, but generally no organ parenchymal infiltration occurs. It is not easy to completely remove the tumor during surgery and it is very easy to relapse after surgery. The 5-year survival rate is only 45%. The tumor epithelium is highly differentiated and is insensitive to radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
