What to do if you have diarrhea during early pregnancy

Diarrhea in early pregnancy is a common phenomenon during pregnancy. Many pregnant women worry that it will have adverse effects on the fetus and affect fetal development. This issue can be either light or heavy, depending on the angle. Diarrhea during pregnancy will not aggravate the condition, but it sends out a dangerous signal. If not handled properly, it may lead to miscarriage. The first three months of pregnancy are the most likely period for miscarriage.

What to do if you have diarrhea during early pregnancy

1. The first thing is to replenish fluids appropriately to make up for the water and electrolytes lost due to diarrhea, especially potassium ions, and to replenish the calories lost due to diarrhea.

2. At the same time, closely observe the fetal condition to see if there are any signs of premature birth or miscarriage.

3. Pay special attention when taking medication. Pregnant women should be particularly careful when using antibiotics. Many commonly used antibiotics and antiprotozoal drugs, in addition to having adverse reactions, have potential teratogenic potential that is different from that of normal people and should also be prohibited. Some milder anti-diarrhea agents, such as kaolin and pectin, can be used. These drugs can absorb water and reduce intestinal motility; activated charcoal tablets may also be worth a try. Do not use opioids to stop diarrhea, because these drugs may cause bacterial overgrowth and repeated infections, which will aggravate diarrhea. Patients can also be given some microecological preparations, such as Lizhu Changle and Zhengchangsheng, to adjust the intestinal flora and strengthen the body and eliminate evil.

4. Pregnant women with diarrhea who are about to give birth should be isolated at the bedside according to intestinal infectious diseases to ensure the safety of the baby and other mothers.

5. Pregnant women suffering from diarrhea can generally resume normal bowel movements after 24-96 hours. If treatment is ineffective, fecal bacteriological culture and drug sensitivity testing should be performed, as well as intestinal protozoa and parasite examinations. Fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy should be performed cautiously when necessary to exclude inflammatory bowel disease.

Diarrhea in early pregnancy is very common among pregnant women, and the treatment strategies are briefly described above. In addition to preventing and treating diarrhea in early pregnancy, pregnant women should also pay attention to keeping warm and preventing colds. They should get more sun in the morning in summer to promote blood circulation; eat more beans and grains to supplement vitamins; eat meat in moderation to supplement protein, etc.
