Three or four times a night, accidentally becoming a "night owl"? Experts: No more than this number is normal

How many times a night do you do this?

When I was young, I slept through the night, but I don’t know since when, I always have to wake up several times at night, so I can’t sleep well all night... I also started to worry about my kidneys:

Is frequent urination at night a sign of kidney problems? After all, urine is formed in the kidneys. If you urinate frequently at night, does it mean that the kidneys are "working overtime" to metabolize urine at night and don't get enough rest?

What is nocturia?

Nocturia, as the name suggests, means urinating at night, which refers to the phenomenon of getting up to urinate during sleep at night.

Normal frequency of nocturia and no nocturia both represent health to a certain extent. The key is to find a lifestyle and water intake that suits you so that the frequency of nocturia remains within a normal range.

However, if you urinate too frequently at night, it is a cause for concern.

Is it normal to get up three or four times during the night?

First of all, no matter whether you get up at night or not, when you sleep, your kidneys are still filtering and metabolizing, producing urine. It's just that this urine will not be discharged immediately, but stored in the bladder, and it will not make you want to urinate until it reaches a certain level.

In other words, not getting up at night does not mean that the kidneys are resting. In fact, they are always working, but the urine produced is stored in the bladder. When the urine in the bladder reaches a certain amount, you need to get up at night to "drain the flood".

As for the frequency, the frequency of nocturia is affected by factors such as water intake and living habits, so when judging whether it is normal, you should comprehensively consider your actual individual situation.

In 2002, the International Continence Society defined nocturia as a patient waking up at night to urinate ≥1 time due to the urge to urinate. The consensus of experts in my country recommends using urination ≥2 times per night as the criterion for judging nocturia.

Generally speaking, it is normal for adults to urinate no more than twice a night.

If you urinate at night more than twice, it will generally affect your sleep quality. If this happens for a long time, it may indicate a problem with your health. Urinary tract infection, prostate hyperplasia, diabetes, chronic nephritis, abnormal bladder muscle contraction function, etc. may all cause frequent urination at night . Therefore, if you feel that you have abnormal nighttime urination, it is recommended that you go to the hospital for examination in time.

How to relieve frequent waking up at night?

Getting up too many times during the night obviously affects sleep. For people who have trouble sleeping, it is simply a hellish experience: once you get up, you can no longer fall asleep...

Why not try to make some adjustments in your lifestyle to reduce the number of times you get up at night? Here are a few tips:

01. Adjust your drinking habits. Avoid drinking too much water, coffee, juice, etc. before going to bed at night. It is best to go to the toilet before going to bed.

02. Diuretics, try to avoid taking them before bedtime. Some patients may take diuretics among their medications, try to avoid taking them before bedtime.

03. Healthy diet : Have a light and balanced dinner. Avoid high-salt foods for dinner, as high-salt foods can cause edema, which in turn affects urination.

04. Exercise the pelvic floor muscles. You can try doing Kegel exercises to exercise the pelvic floor muscles, strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, and improve bladder control ability.

05. Regular work and rest habits to relieve emotions . Developing good work and rest habits can help regulate body functions, maintain a good attitude, avoid negative emotions such as anxiety and tension, and also help relieve the frequency of nocturia.
