I don't know if you have ever had this experience: you stay up late at night and are so hungry that you are struggling to decide whether to have a midnight snack. On impulse, you order spicy noodles and snail noodles, eat until you are satisfied, and then fall asleep. But while you feel comfortable, your body suffers!

What changes will occur in your body if you often eat midnight snacks?

The food we eat must pass through the esophagus and enter the stomach through the cardia. The cardia is like a smart door with a sphincter to control the switch. After the food enters, the stomach starts to work, contracting and relaxing, stirring and stirring, and adding gastric acid to help digestion, and finally sending the stirred food into the small intestine.

If the cardia sphincter is loose and cannot close, the stirred food and stomach acid will flow back into the esophagus. Stomach acid is highly corrosive. Repeated flushing of the esophagus will cause inflammation, swelling, and even ulceration of the esophageal mucosa. Over time, you will develop gastroesophageal reflux disease. Once you are infected, you will suffer from heartburn and acid reflux.

Heartburn is like someone burning your sternum with a lighter, and it is especially noticeable 1-2 hours after a meal. When you have acid reflux, a hot current with a sour and bitter taste surges from the bottom to the top. Moreover, the trachea and esophagus are neighbors, and when the esophagus refluxes, the trachea also suffers, and symptoms such as coughing and expectoration appear. Many people think it is tracheitis or pharyngitis.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease can disguise itself. In addition to typical symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux, there are also atypical symptoms such as throat discomfort and chest pain. Many people confuse it with chronic pharyngitis in clinic. Chronic pharyngitis often causes foreign body sensation, dryness, itching in the throat, etc., which usually occurs when the immune system is low; throat discomfort caused by gastroesophageal reflux is mainly foreign body sensation, chronic cough, and frequent throat clearing. If heartburn and acid reflux are ignored for a long time, the esophagus will be repeatedly stimulated, and the risk of cancer will also be greatly increased.

Why does gastroesophageal reflux disease occur?

There are many reasons:

1. Obesity, especially central obesity with a large belly, increases the risk of the disease; pregnancy and constipation can increase intra-abdominal pressure and easily cause reflux.

2. Long-term smoking and drinking will make the esophageal mucosa fragile.

3. Eating habits are also crucial. Drinking strong tea or coffee for a long time, eating spicy or sour foods, eating late-night snacks frequently, and eating too much staple food may aggravate acid reflux.

4. When the mental stress is high, the esophagus will become sensitive, thus “assisting” reflux.

If we want to protect our esophagus and stomach, we have to take action.

Friends who smoke and drink, please quit as soon as possible. Smoking and drinking cause cancer, this is scientifically proven, and quitting is good for your whole body.
Fat friends, especially those with big bellies, please lose weight quickly. If a man's waist circumference exceeds 90 cm and a woman's waist circumference exceeds 85 cm, it is central obesity. We Chinese are particularly prone to abdominal obesity, so we must pay attention to it.

Don’t eat 1-2 hours before going to bed, especially acidic foods. When sleeping, raise the head of the bed by 15-20 cm. Note that you should raise the bed board, not just the pillow, otherwise it will fold the esophagus and increase the pressure in the stomach.
Also, try not to put too much mental pressure on yourself. These methods are easier said than done, but for the sake of our health, how about not eating midnight snacks starting tonight? Take it one step at a time and develop good habits!
