Many adults sit for more than 8 hours a day, sitting to work, watching TV, playing with mobile phones. Recently, Xiao Dai, a 26-year-old girl from Zhejiang, found that she had unbearable pain in her waist, which could not be relieved for a long time. After going to the hospital for a check-up, the doctor told her that she might have dead butt syndrome.

Jin Wei, deputy director of the rehabilitation medicine department of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, said that dead butt syndrome, also known as gluteal amnesia, is a disease of gluteal muscle dysfunction. It may cause pain in the waist, hip and knee joints. In layman's terms, the buttocks muscles forget their job because they have not worked for a long time.

Jin Wei said that one of the "black hands" behind gluteal amnesia is long-term sitting . Long-term sitting affects not only the appearance of the buttocks, but is also likely to lead to the degeneration of the gluteal muscle function. The three main muscles of the gluteal muscles are the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus.

The muscles related to "dead buttocks" are mainly the gluteus maximus , which is one of the largest and most powerful muscles in the human skeletal muscles (second only to the quadriceps femoris in the thigh). It plays a vital role in maintaining the stability of the pelvis and limiting excessive anterior tilt of the pelvis. The uprightness of our torso is also related to it.

"When you sit for a long time, the hip joint is continuously bent, which causes the gluteal muscles to shut down. Over time, the brain has adapted to this abnormal tension intensity, the emission of nerve signals is getting weaker and weaker, and the gluteal muscles gradually forget their ability to contract, which not only affects the beauty of the buttocks, such as the disappearance of the perky buttocks and the soft buttocks, but also because the gluteal muscles do not work, the waist and knee muscles share the work of the gluteal muscles for a long time, causing patients to have a series of symptoms in the waist, hip and knee joints: for example, walking becomes more and more strenuous, the walking balance ability becomes worse, and it is difficult to stand up after sitting down; for example, the lumbar sacral region, hip, knee joints and other parts are prone to pain, and the pain even worsens after walking." Jin Wei said that if you have these symptoms, and you usually have a sedentary habit and lack exercise, you must be alert to the occurrence of dead butt syndrome. "You can do an action to test yourself, raise your hands above your head and do a squat. If you have X-shaped legs, inward knees, pelvic tilt, excessive lumbar flexion, etc. when squatting, it may mean that your hip muscles are very weak."

How to prevent "gluteal amnesia" ? First of all, avoid sitting for long periods of time. Jin Wei suggested that you can get up and move for a few minutes every hour, do some simple stretching exercises, and move your buttocks. In addition, you should strengthen your exercise. Adults should do 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, or 75-150 minutes of high-intensity aerobic exercise, or an equivalent combination of the two intensities of aerobic exercise every week according to their physical condition; you can do targeted buttocks exercises.

For those who have "lost" their gluteal muscles, they can reactivate their gluteal muscles by doing hip bridges, sit/stand leg raises, leg curls, iliopsoas relaxation, cat-cow poses, etc. "When practicing these movements, please adjust according to your own ability and adaptability to avoid injury. If the situation is serious, please seek medical attention in time; it should be noted that there are many causes of low back pain and it cannot be generalized. You can go to the outpatient clinic of the rehabilitation medicine department for treatment. Only after the cause of low back pain is confirmed to be dead butt syndrome can you start training, and do not blindly treat it." Jin Wei said.
