May cause cough, chest pain, and even cancer

What are the dangers of frequent hair dyeing and straight hair?

Things you must do before dyeing your hair

Let me show you the details!

01 Do not use hair straightening products containing these two ingredients

Answer: Do not use hair straightening products that contain formaldehyde or methylene glycol (which releases formaldehyde).

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering banning certain hair-straightening products in the United States, saying they may cause cancer, according to CCTV Finance.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it is considering a ban on hair straightening products that contain formaldehyde or contain methylene glycol (which releases formaldehyde). The agency says these chemical straighteners release carcinogens, and inhaling formaldehyde fumes can cause a range of health problems, from eye and throat irritation to coughing, wheezing, chest pain, chronic headaches, asthma and cancer.

02 A 10-year study of 30,000 people confirmed that hair straighteners cause cancer

In October 2022, a study that tracked 33,000 people (women aged 35 to 74) over a 10-year period was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study confirmed that the use of chemical hair straighteners is associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer in women; and the more frequent the use, the more significant the increased risk.

Even more shocking is that the results also showed that people who often use hair straighteners on others have a significantly increased risk of uterine cancer. Compared with those who have never used hair straighteners on others, the risk increased by 42%.

03 What are the dangers of frequently dyeing or straightening hair?

1. Increased risk of cancer

In 2020, a study published in the British Medical Journal confirmed that the use of permanent hair dye is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and lymphoma, and the incidence rate is positively correlated with the dose of hair dye used.

Compared with non-users, users of permanent hair dye have a 6% higher risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin; for every 50 additional times of hair dyeing, the risk of breast cancer increases by 1% to 2%; those who use permanent hair dye have a 21% higher risk of ovarian cancer than non-users; women with naturally dark hair who have used permanent hair dye have a 289% increased risk of Hodgkin lymphoma.

2. Damage to hair

Frequent hair dyeing may make hair thinner and more fragile, prone to breakage and damage, and hair may become dull, rough and split, like dead grass. At the same time, the stimulation of hair dye will cause inflammatory reactions in the scalp and hair follicles, which will cause hair follicles to shrink over time, and hair will become thinner and finally fall off.

3. Allergies

Ingredients such as paraphenylenediamine (PPDA) in hair dyes may cause skin allergies, so when dyeing or after dyeing, you must closely observe whether there are mild symptoms such as scalp redness, itching, and scaling, as well as more serious allergic reaction symptoms such as scalp and facial edema and blisters, which can occur within a few hours to several days. If scratched, it is very easy to cause bacterial infection.

4. Heavy Metal Poisoning

It is allowed to add a certain amount of heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, to hair dyes. However, some irregular and poor quality hair dyes may contain more or even exceed the standard heavy metals. If such hair dyes are used repeatedly for a long time, it may cause heavy metal poisoning.

04 10 things you must know before dyeing your hair

1. It’s best not to wash your hair before dyeing it

The oil secreted by the scalp can form a sebum film, which can protect the skin from external stimuli.

2. Do a skin test before dyeing your hair

Before dyeing your hair, you should apply a little hair dye behind your ears. If swelling, itching and other symptoms occur within 48 hours, it means you are allergic to it and it is not recommended to use it.

3. Try not to rub your scalp

Hair dye is a chemical agent that is irritating to a certain extent. You should be careful when dyeing your hair and try not to let it rub against your scalp, let alone stay on your scalp for too long. When washing, be sure to clean your scalp thoroughly to avoid hair dye residue.

The water temperature should not be too hot or too cold, it should be roughly equivalent to body temperature.

4. When dyeing your hair, your scalp feels itchy and you can’t scratch it

When dyeing your hair, you can apply some cream on your hairline, ears, side face, and neck to reduce the irritation caused by the hair dye touching your skin. If you feel itchy on your scalp when dyeing your hair, don't scratch it, otherwise it will easily induce infection.

You can use a hair dryer on cold air first. If it still itches, or even stings or has a rash, it is recommended that you stop dyeing your hair immediately and rinse the hair dye off with clean water.

5. Follow the instructions on the package

When dyeing your hair yourself, you should strictly follow the instructions in the package, paying special attention to all warning statements to avoid problems caused by operating errors.

6. Don’t mix different colors

Hair dyes of different colors or brands may react chemically when mixed due to their different ingredients, causing unnecessary harm.

7. Choose a dark semi-permanent hair dye

In terms of the damage to hair, permanent hair dye is greater than temporary and semi-permanent hair dye, and dyeing light colors is greater than dyeing dark colors. If you want to reduce hair damage, you can choose temporary hair dye or semi-permanent hair dye, and try to dye it darker.

8. Control the frequency of hair dyeing

Frequent hair dyeing may make hair thinner and more fragile, prone to breakage and damage, so the interval between hair dyeing should be as long as possible, preferably more than 3 months.

9. It is best not to do perming and dyeing at the same time

Whether it is perming or dyeing, it will cause certain damage to the hair quality. If perming and dyeing are done at the same time, it will cause double damage to the hair.

10. Shampoo selection

After dyeing your hair, you can wash it with ordinary shampoo. Try not to use shampoo containing selenium disulfide, as it can easily cause discoloration.

05 These 3 groups of people are not recommended to perm or dye their hair

1. Pregnant women

Hair perms and dyes are chemicals that can easily cause allergic reactions. After delivery, pregnant mothers may experience hair loss due to hormonal changes. It is best to avoid hair perms and dyes during pregnancy.

2. Patients with scalp skin diseases

For example, if you have folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, etc. on your scalp, the chemicals and high temperature used in perming and dyeing will undoubtedly make the hair worse.

3. People who are allergic to hair perms or hair dyes

People with allergic skin should not perm or dye their hair.
