What is going on?

According to People's Daily Online: Local CDC staff conducted a detailed investigation at the scene and sent water samples for testing. As of 21:00 on July 25, two patients tested positive for adenovirus and their conditions were stable. It was preliminarily determined that this was a disease caused by adenovirus.

Today we will study:

What is adenovirus?

How are adenoviruses spread?

What should we pay attention to when swimming in summer?

Adenovirus

Adenovirus is a common virus that causes respiratory tract infections in children. Li Dongzeng, chief physician of the Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at Beijing You'an Hospital, introduced: Adenovirus is a double-stranded DNA virus that can cause infections in the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, urethra, bladder, eyes, liver and other organ systems.

Adenovirus infection generally has mild symptoms, and most cases can heal on their own, but some cases may develop severe and critical conditions, or even death. In particular, patients with immunodeficiency or chronic respiratory diseases, heart disease, etc. are at a higher risk of developing serious illness after infection with adenovirus.

If the symptoms after adenovirus infection are mild, symptomatic treatment measures can generally be taken, including drinking more water and getting more rest. If there are suspected symptoms of severe illness, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Common symptoms of severe illness include pale complexion, rapid and shallow breathing, recurrent fever or persistent high fever, frequent and severe coughing, mental depression, abnormal irritability, frequent vomiting and diarrhea, as well as refusal to eat and dark urine .

Mode of transmission

Adenovirus is highly contagious and can often cause outbreaks, mainly in closed, crowded and humid environments, such as schools, childcare institutions, hospitals, indoor swimming pools, etc. There are generally three ways for adenovirus to spread:

1. Droplet transmission

The main mode of transmission of adenovirus in respiratory infections is when a patient coughs or sneezes.

2. Contact transmission

Such as touching objects or surfaces contaminated with adenovirus, touching the mouth, nose or eyes without washing hands, etc.

3. Fecal-oral transmission

Digestive tract infections Adenoviruses can be spread through the stool of an infected person, such as during diaper changes.

Li Dong, chief physician of the respiratory and infection department of Beijing You'an Hospital, said that it is common to be infected with adenovirus in swimming pools. "It may be that the swimming pool contains adenovirus. If you touch the virus with your hands and then rub your eyes, mouth or nose, you will be infected. It may also be because of the gathering of people in public swimming pools, which causes respiratory droplets to spread. The so-called 'swimming pool fever' (i.e. pharyngoconjunctivitis) is caused by adenovirus, and the main manifestations are fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose and other respiratory symptoms after swimming."

There is currently no adenovirus vaccine available for the general population. The most effective way to reduce the spread of adenovirus is to maintain good hand and respiratory hygiene . Prevention measures are similar to those for other respiratory and digestive tract infectious diseases.

Pay attention to hand hygiene, wash your hands frequently with soap or hand sanitizer, and do not rub your eyes or touch your mouth and nose with dirty hands; do not touch food directly before washing your hands. Parents must also wash their hands before preparing food for their children to avoid gastrointestinal transmission; when going out to play, try to avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of respiratory infections, and wash your hands in time after returning home.

Summer swimming precautions

1. The swimming environment must be guaranteed

When the temperature is high, the swimming pool environment is very likely to cause the reproduction of bacteria. When swimming in the summer, you should check whether the swimming pool has a health license, water quality notice and other materials.

Regular swimming pools have water residual chlorine, pH value, water temperature, etc. published every 2 hours (every hour for outdoor swimming pools) on their walls or electronic screens. In addition, there are also no-swimming signs prohibiting patients with hepatitis, severe trachoma, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis ("pink eye"), otitis media, intestinal infectious diseases, mental illness, sexually transmitted diseases, and alcoholics from entering.

2. Do not swim if you are unwell

Check your body for wounds before swimming and avoid swimming with wounds. Do not swim in public swimming pools if you have fever, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, etc.

3. Wear swimming equipment

Use running water and soap to wash your body before and after swimming; wear goggles and a swimming cap when swimming to avoid eye contact with pool water; try not to swallow pool water when swimming.

4. Don’t swim for too long

The skin generally has three reaction phases to cold stimulation;

▲ After entering the water, the skin’s blood vessels contract due to the stimulation of cold, and the skin color becomes pale.

▲ After staying in water for a certain period of time, the blood flow on the body surface expands, the skin turns from pale to light red, and the skin turns from cold to warm.

▲ If you stay in the water for too long, the heat dissipation of the body temperature will be greater than the heat generation, and goose bumps and chills will appear on the skin. This is a taboo period for summer swimming, and you should get out of the water in time. The duration of swimming should generally not exceed 1.5 to 2 hours .
