Are the white spots on glasses not dust but disease? People of this type should pay special attention!

Recently, the issue of white spots appearing on glasses has attracted the attention of many netizens.

There are many different opinions, some say it is blepharitis, some say it is eyelid dandruff, and some say it is corneal epithelial exfoliation. So, what exactly causes white spots on glasses? Li Kai, chief ophthalmologist at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, answered this question.

Director Li Kai introduced that there is a circle of glands that can secrete oil near the roots of our eyelashes, called meibomian glands. The oil they secrete covers the outermost layer of tears on our cornea, protecting the tears from excessive evaporation.

The eyelid margin is rich in glandular tissue and fatty secretions, which are easily contaminated by dirt and bacteria and cause infection. Chronic inflammation of the eyelid margin skin, eyelash follicles and glands will lead to blepharitis.

What is blepharitis

Blepharitis is a subacute or chronic inflammation and one of the common ophthalmic diseases. The main lesions occur in the eyelid skin, eyelash follicles and their glands.

Its main clinical manifestations include itching, redness and swelling of the eyelid skin, stinging of the eyes, scaling and cuff-like secretions at the root of the eyelashes. In severe cases, the eyelashes may grow in disorder, fall off and become inverted. Over time, it may cause conjunctivitis, thickening of the eyelid margin and dry eyes due to meibomian gland dysfunction.

Classification of blepharitis

Blepharitis is clinically divided into three types:

1. Scaly blepharitis

Patients may experience stinging, dryness, and itching in the eyes, congestion of the eyelid margins, epithelial scales attached to the eyelashes and eyelid margins, punctate sebum secretion on the eyelid margin surface, sebum gathering at the root of the eyelashes, forming a yellow waxy secretion, which forms a scab after drying. After the scales and scabs are removed, the congested eyelid margin surface is exposed, but there are no ulcers or pus spots. The eyelashes fall off easily and can regenerate.

2. Ulcerative blepharitis

The sebaceous glands at the eyelid margin secrete a lot, which forms scabs after drying and sticks the eyelashes into bundles. After the scabs are removed, bleeding ulcers and small pustules can be seen at the root of the eyelashes. Because the lesions are deep into the sebaceous glands and hair follicles, the hair follicles are destroyed, the eyelashes are easy to fall off and difficult to regenerate, forming bald eyelashes, and even if they regenerate, the position is not correct. If the lesions are delayed for a long time, the eyelid margins may become thick and deformed.

3. Canthal blepharitis

The eyelid margin and surrounding skin are significantly congested and eroded, and patients feel dryness, itching and a foreign body sensation, which is often accompanied by chronic conjunctivitis, called canthal blepharoconjunctivitis.

Director Li Kai said, "The recurring white dot-like deposits on the glasses may indeed be caused by scaly blepharitis. The eyelid margins are red, and grayish-white epithelial scales can be seen at the roots of the eyelashes. These scaly secretions are deposited on the lenses of the glasses, which may form dust-like white dots."

03

How is blepharitis treated?

Director Li Kai said that blepharitis may be related to refractive errors, visual fatigue, long-term wear of contact lenses, malnutrition and poor eye hygiene habits. In addition, long-term use of inferior eye cosmetics can also induce blepharitis.

If blepharitis occurs, it can be treated with saline solution to clean the eyelid margins, special eyelid cleansing wipes, and topical antibiotic eye ointment.

If the symptoms do not improve, be sure to see an ophthalmologist in time and take medication under the guidance of an ophthalmologist.

Daily care

Therefore, if we want to protect our eyes, we should pay attention to the following points in our daily life:

1. Keep your eyes clean, pay attention to eye hygiene, minimize the use of eye cosmetics, and avoid irritating factors.

2. Maintain a balanced diet, eat less spicy and hot foods, and be careful about eating fatty and greasy foods. It is better to eat more fruits and fresh vegetables, especially foods rich in vitamin A and vitamin C , such as carrots, kiwis, oranges, milk, etc.

3. For patients who suffer from skin diseases, they should actively treat the primary disease, diagnose and treat it early to avoid secondary eyelid diseases and the occurrence of blepharitis.
