Exercising for 11 minutes a day may reduce the risk of disease by more than 20%

China Science and Technology News Network, March 2 (Wang Huilan) The latest research found that just 75 minutes of exercise per week, or 11 minutes of moderate physical activity per day, can reduce the risk of premature death by 23%, the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17%, and the risk of cancer by 7%. The study suggests that if everyone can reach this standard, one in ten premature deaths worldwide can be avoided.

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, is the largest of its kind. Researchers from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge published 196 research articles, revealing the relationship between exercise and the risk of death, as well as the risk of specific diseases such as heart disease, stroke, leukemia and colon cancer. The study followed the participants for an average of 10 years, monitoring their exercise habits as well as disease and mortality.

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking instead of driving, brisk walking, dancing, biking and playing outdoors can all fill your 11 minutes of exercise a day. If a person is short on time, vigorous exercise, including any activity that increases the heart rate and makes you sweat, such as running or biking fast, can also achieve the effect.

Naveed Sattar, professor of cardiovascular and metabolic health at the University of Glasgow, said anyone looking to add more physical activity to their daily routine should choose exercises that are realistic and fit with their current lifestyle.

"Activity is sustainable, and moderate exercise doesn't have to be just sports or running," Sattar said. He suggested that walking an extra 1,000 steps a day (about 10 minutes of activity) is enough for many people, and you can find a way to enjoy walking, listen to music or go with friends, or try walking or cycling to work or school.
