Counterpoint: Apple will account for 53% of the US smartphone market in Q3 2024, with shipments down 5% year-on-year

Apple still completely dominates the US smartphone market, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest quarterly market share report. In the third quarter of this year (July to September), Apple accounted for 53% of the market, far ahead of Samsung’s 23%. In third place is Lenovo, and don’t forget that Lenovo also owns Motorola – most, if not all, of that 14% share belongs to Motorola.

The next closest brand is HMD, but it only has 1% of the market. The “other” brands together only account for 9%. We can’t think of a more polarized market than this: one manufacturer accounts for more than half of the market share, and only the other two brands really matter.

As can be seen from the above figure, Apple's market share has remained stable in the past three quarters after reaching its peak in the fourth quarter of last year, and in the second and third quarters of 2023, Apple's market share is similar to that of now. It has to be said that this is an amazingly stable performance.

On the other hand, Samsung fell from its 31% peak in Q1 2024, while Lenovo/Motorola achieved its best performance in the past six quarters in Q3 2024.

The overall smartphone market fell 6% in Q3 compared to Q3 2023. As a result, Apple's actual shipments (not market share) fell 5% year-over-year. Samsung's shipments fell 13% year-over-year, while Motorola's shipments grew 21% year-over-year.
