Ericsson: Global Mobility Report, Q2 2024

By the second quarter of 2024, the number of global 5G users will reach 1.9 billion.

In the second quarter of 2024, the total number of mobile users will be close to 8.7 billion, with a net increase of 60 million users in this quarter.

China added the most new users during the quarter (+22 million), followed by India (+8 million) and Bangladesh (+2 million).

The global mobile user penetration rate is 107%.

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions grew by about 100 million in the quarter to 7.7 billion, up 5% year-on-year. Mobile broadband accounts for 89% of all mobile subscriptions.

5G subscriptions grew by 161 million in the quarter, to more than 1.9 billion. This accounts for 22% of all mobile subscriptions. About 320 communications service providers have launched commercial 5G services, and more than 60 have deployed or launched 5G standalone (SA) networks.

4G subscribers continued to decline this quarter. The total number decreased by 25 million as users continued to migrate to 5G. The total number of 4G subscribers is approximately 5.2 billion, accounting for approximately 60% of all mobile subscribers. WCDMA/HSP subscribers decreased by 34 million this quarter, and GSM/EDGE subscribers decreased by 41 million.

The number of unique mobile users is 6.5 billion. The difference between the number of subscriptions and the number of subscribers is due to inactive subscriptions, multiple device ownership and/or optimization of subscriptions for different types of calls.
