Samsung Electronics reportedly sold more smartphones in the United States than Apple in the 12 months from April 2023 to March 2024. However, the latter was still able to sell more high-end flagship models in the same period. CIRP's report shows that Samsung and Apple remain the two largest smartphone brands in the United States between April 2023 and March 2024. Samsung topped the list with a 38% market share, followed by Apple with a 33% market share. Motorola unexpectedly held onto third place with 13% market share, and Google rounded out the top four with 6% market share. Although Samsung has surpassed Apple in the overall market, most of its sales come from mid-range and entry-level models, while nearly two-thirds of Apple's market is made up of "flagship phones." Data shows that 64% of Apple's market share comes from flagship devices, while only 42% of Samsung's sales come from top-tier products. CIRP defines a flagship as the “latest model series” of each manufacturer. For Apple right now, that means the iPhone 15 series. For Samsung, the current flagship lineup includes the Galaxy S24 models and the latest Flip and Fold devices. The iPhone 15 series was Apple’s flagship until the iPhone 14 was launched in September 2023. Similarly, the Galaxy S24 series was Samsung’s flagship until the Galaxy S23 series was launched earlier this year. Samsung has been able to maintain its top spot in the U.S. market because it has a diverse product portfolio that caters to consumers at nearly every price point. While the Galaxy S series usually gets a lot of media attention, Samsung's best-selling products have always been the A series, which are designed for people who want a simple smartphone with simple features at an affordable price. Apple, on the other hand, doesn’t offer much for value-conscious buyers, leaving the entire segment to Android vendors. The only “affordable” smartphone in Apple’s portfolio is the 2022 iPhone SE, which starts at $429. Apple is expected to launch an upgraded version of the device in spring 2025, which will include several design upgrades and faster hardware. It remains to be seen whether this update can challenge Samsung's dominance in the mid-range market. From Chinese Industry Information Station |
