Television remains the most popular channel for U.S. viewers to watch the live Olympic Games. According to a May 2016 survey, the majority of U.S. sports fans said they planned to watch live Olympic events on television, but marketers cannot ignore other channels as multi-screen becomes more popular.

At the end of May 2016, Rubicon Project and Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates surveyed 1,105 American Internet users who claim to be sports fans. Most respondents said they would watch live events on TV (84%), and other channels for watching live events include PC (44%) and mobile phones (36%). Respondents said they prefer to check game results and scores online.

However, viewers will also use a second screen while watching the game. According to the survey, 51% of respondents said they would surf the Internet on a second screen while watching the game, and 47% of respondents said they would browse emails while watching the game. At the same time, at least 1/3 of the respondents would perform other activities on the second screen, such as accessing social networks, checking the news, or sending messages to family and friends. 2/5 of the respondents said they would search for game scores while watching the game on TV.

The survey shows that British netizens will also use a second screen when watching the game. The RadiumOne survey found that more than half of British viewers said they would use a smartphone while watching the game (59%), followed by a tablet.

According to eMarketer's forecast, this year about 85% of American Internet users will access the Internet while watching TV, mainly using smartphones (68%).
