YouGov: Americans less likely to seek advice on social media

199IT original compilation

Social networks have become an integral part of people’s lives and an important source of information, but when it comes to seeking advice on solving problems, social media is least trusted. Americans are most likely to turn to their partners (36%) or friends (20%) for personal advice.

One in 10 Americans say they don’t turn to anyone for advice. For most, parents (12%), siblings (7%), other family members (6%) or religious leaders (2%) are also trusted sources for advice.

YouGov's research shows that age is a significant factor, with young people (18-25) more likely to ask friends (26%) or parents (23%) for advice, with only 22% relying on their partner.

Millennials aged 25 to 34 are more likely to ask their significant other for advice (33%) than their friends (21%) or parents (22%). The older they get, the more likely they are to rely on their significant other over others.

Unsurprisingly, younger people are more likely to seek advice on social media, albeit at a lower rate. Among Americans aged 18-25, 2% would seek advice on social media when faced with a problem. That number drops to 1% among those aged 25-34.

In addition, Americans of all races are very dependent on their spouses, friends and parents, but to varying degrees. Whites (41%) are more willing to rely on their partners than Hispanics (31%), Asians (27%) and African Americans (21%). Minorities are more willing to seek advice from their parents.
