Line, the developer of the popular instant messaging app Line, released its second quarter 2013 financial results, showing total revenue of 12.8 billion yen (about 132.3 million U.S. dollars) in the second quarter, up 348.9% year-on-year and 45.3% from 9.77 billion yen (about 101.3 million U.S. dollars) in the previous quarter.

In terms of regional revenue distribution, in the second fiscal quarter, most of Line's revenue came from the Japanese, Thai, Taiwanese, Spanish and Indonesian markets.

According to the business division, Line's revenue mainly comes from its mobile instant messaging application Line, which has a revenue of US$101 million, accounting for 76% of Line's total revenue, a month-on-month increase of 66.9%. Among them, in-game payments accounted for 53% of Line's revenue, emoticon sticker purchases accounted for 27%, and sponsored emoticon stickers accounted for 20%.

The increase in in-game payments has become a major source of revenue for Line. Considering the nationwide airplane-shooting phenomenon triggered by the WeChat 5.0 released a few days ago, the profit potential of mobile social games based on the expansion of mobile instant messaging is undoubtedly worth looking forward to.

On July 21, Line announced that its global user base had exceeded 200 million, just six months after it announced on January 18 this year that its global user base had reached 100 million. Line was officially launched on June 23, 2011, and quickly gained favor among young people in East Asia. Currently, the Android version of Line has been downloaded more than 1 million times.

Future development:

Line said that the number of Line app users has grown particularly rapidly in Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Spain and Indonesia, and it will strengthen its global marketing efforts in the future. The company expects that the global download volume of Line apps will reach 300 million times this year.

At the same time, Line will also face fierce competition from Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, and WeChat.
