National Hypertension Day | Don’t fall for these misunderstandings about hypertension drug treatment!

Hypertension is one of the common chronic diseases. If hypertension is not well controlled, it may cause damage to target organs such as the heart, kidneys, brain and blood vessels. Therefore, strict control of blood pressure can effectively reduce the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Drug treatment is the main method of hypertension control, and it is particularly important to take antihypertensive drugs correctly. Although many hypertensive patients often deal with antihypertensive drugs, they often step on minefields by mistake.

Misconception 1: Not willing to take medication too early

Hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. If not treated in time, it will significantly accelerate the process of atherosclerosis. Controlling hypertension can prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke and coronary heart disease. Therefore, early diagnosis, early treatment and early achievement of the target are necessary.

Misconception 2: Taking medication based on feelings

Some patients with hypertension do not have symptoms and think that they do not need to take medication. In fact, the level of blood pressure is not necessarily related to the severity of symptoms. Even if there are no symptoms, high blood pressure will continue to damage the patient's organs.

Myth 3: Stop taking medication once blood pressure returns to normal

Some hypertensive patients stop taking medication on their own when their blood pressure drops to normal after taking medication. This is a very harmful practice. After stopping medication, blood pressure will rise again. If blood pressure fluctuates too much, damage to the heart, brain, and kidney target organs will be more serious. Hypertension generally cannot be cured and can only be controlled through comprehensive treatment, which requires long-term or even lifelong use of antihypertensive drugs.

Myth 4: Just taking medicine without considering the effect

Some patients with hypertension think that as long as they take medicine, everything will be fine and they don't have to worry anymore, so they don't pay attention to their blood pressure values and don't measure their blood pressure regularly. It is very important to monitor and record blood pressure regularly, understand the relationship between medication and blood pressure changes, and adjust individual medication, such as how much dosage is needed or how to combine medications to stabilize blood pressure at an ideal level.

Misunderstanding 5: Blindly buying and taking medicine

Some patients do not take medicine according to the doctor's instructions, but take medicine according to the recommendations of fellow patients, or believe in the "good medicine" in advertisements, or think that the more expensive the medicine, the better. These are blind and harmful. At present, there are many kinds of drugs for treating hypertension, and the choice of drugs must be carried out under the guidance of doctors or pharmacists.

Myth 6: Slow-release and controlled-release preparations can be separated at will

Sustained-release and controlled-release preparations use formulation technology to control the release rate of drugs in order to maintain a long-lasting and stable blood pressure-lowering effect. If the doses are broken apart and taken, the drugs will be released rapidly and will not achieve long-term therapeutic effects. They may even lead to excessive drug concentrations in the patient's blood, resulting in drug poisoning.
