Facebook: 2011 Facebook Topics: Bin Laden's Death Most Popular

December 7, 2011 Facebook today released the rankings of the most popular status update topics in 2011 worldwide and in specific countries.

Globally, bin Laden's death became the most popular status update topic on Facebook, with the Green Bay Packers' victory in the Super Bowl and the trial of Casey Anthony (an American single mother accused of killing her own daughter) ranking second and third respectively.

Comparing the top news topics on Twitter and Facebook this year, it is not difficult to see that the difference between the two social networking sites is quite obvious: Twitter's real-time function makes entertainment award ceremonies, natural disasters and sports games dominate user news releases, while Facebook's discussion function makes major global news events and celebrity deaths rank high.

Facebook's official page currently has a 2011 event app that lists pop culture phenomena in multiple countries. In the United States and Canada, for example, "lms" (like my status) has become a common way to ask for someone's consent to increase their attention. This shows that users at least roughly understand how the EdgeRank news feed classification algorithm works. At the same time, "tbh" (to be honest) is quite popular as a way to express that users are speaking from the heart.
