If parents are not nearsighted, does that mean their children will not be nearsighted?

If parents are not nearsighted, does that mean their children will not be nearsighted?

We all know that when both parents wear thick lenses, the probability of their children becoming myopic is much higher. So the question is: as long as both parents are not myopic, do their children not have to worry about vision loss in the future?

1. What factors dominate myopia?

Just as everyone thinks, children whose parents are both myopic may have a higher probability of myopia in the future. This is not without reason, because there are two main factors causing myopia, one is environmental factors, and the other is genetic factors:

Environmental factors

Environmental factors include development, eye use, diet and other aspects. Among them, the more important one is eye use habits. For example, long-term close-range eye use (including the use of electronic products, reading books, etc.), severe lack of outdoor activity time, poor indoor lighting, etc., will affect vision development, stimulate the growth of the eye axis, and eventually develop into myopia.

Genetic factors

Just like the impact of parents' height on their children, parents' myopia will also affect the probability of their children's myopia, but there is another small rule in between: the inheritance probability of high myopia is higher than that of moderate and low myopia, and moderate and low myopia is mostly caused by environmental factors.

2.How to protect eyesight?

Do not over-consume your hyperopia reserve

The development of the eyeball is a gradual process. The child's refractive state changes from hyperopia after birth to normal with age. The degree of hyperopia before this is the child's hyperopia reserve.

Generally speaking, children will complete emmetropia before school age. However, early exposure to electronic products or excessive eye strain will cause children's hyperopia reserves to be over-consumed. Parents should encourage them to reduce close-range eye use as much as possible, and engage in more outdoor activities and relax by looking into the distance.

Have your child have their eyesight checked regularly

For the healthy development of children's eyes, parents should take their children to an ophthalmology hospital as regularly as possible to understand their eye condition. Based on the genetic possibility of myopia, parents with high myopia should pay more attention to their children's vision development, establish optometry files, and ensure that changes in their children's vision can be intervened in a timely manner.

Take scientific prevention and control measures

In response to children's vision changes, we need to take scientific prevention and control measures:

First, maintain good eye habits to prevent a sharp decline in vision; second, when you need to wear glasses, be sure to follow the doctor's instructions and wear them correctly; third, if the degree changes rapidly and obviously, take medical methods to control it in time, such as orthokeratology lenses.

We must know that myopia is irreversible. The glasses that have been worn will "haunt" children for many years, and the pathological changes in the eyeballs cannot be reversed. Therefore, parents must not blindly "rely" on heredity, and ignore the possibility of their children's myopia because of their own good eyesight. It is better to protect children's eye health by promptly discovering abnormal vision in their children through examinations and choosing scientific myopia prevention and control plans.
