At the beginning of the school year, are children flocking to get glasses? Doctors: Pay attention to whether it is "pseudomyopia"!

Recently, Xiaolin (pseudonym), a third-grade student, told his parents that he had trouble seeing the blackboard clearly. Upon hearing this, Xiaolin's parents immediately took him to an eyewear store to have his eyesight tested. The clerk said that Xiaolin was nearsighted and recommended that he wear glasses.

"During the period of school opening, many parents mentioned in the group that their children had myopia due to excessive eye use during the summer vacation, and they all fitted their children with glasses; even my neighbors said that even if the child's degree was very low, they still had to get glasses for fear of affecting the child's class." However, Xiaolin's parents said that they did not want their child to wear glasses early, so even after repeated persuasion from the clerk of the optical shop, they still did not let Xiaolin wear glasses. To be on the safe side, they took their child to the optometry department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University. After the doctor gave Xiaolin a full set of comprehensive optometry examinations, it was found that Xiaolin had abnormal visual function and needed mydriasis for optometry. After a series of examinations, it was found that Xiaolin was suffering from pseudomyopia.

Yan Binxian, member of the Optometrist and Optician Group of the Medical Technician Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, national first-level (senior) optometrist, and deputy director of the optometry department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said: Pseudomyopia does not require wearing glasses. Pseudomyopia can be restored to normal through visual function training in professional and regular hospitals or drug intervention.

What is myopia?

Myopia is caused by a combination of factors such as congenital heredity, acquired eye habits and environment, which leads to excessive length of the eye axis, resulting in symptoms such as blurred far vision.

What is pseudomyopia?

A temporary, reversible myopia phenomenon caused by visual functional accommodation spasm. Epidemiological surveys show that the younger the age, the higher the incidence of visual functional accommodation spasm and the more severe the degree, so the probability of pseudomyopia increases accordingly.

Why do you need an eye examination before getting glasses?

If a child's vision is declining, you can't just go to the optical shop to get a pair of glasses. Instead, you need to go to a regular hospital for a detailed eye examination, because there are many reasons for vision decline, not just myopia. For example, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, etc. can all lead to vision decline. However, these diseases cannot be treated simply by wearing glasses. If you don't have an eye examination before getting glasses, you may miss the best time to treat these diseases, causing eye damage.

Zhou Chao, member of the Medical Technicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, national first-level (senior) optometrist, and director of the optometry department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said: If parents find that their children's eyesight is declining, please be sure to take their children to a regular hospital for a comprehensive eye examination and symptomatic treatment. Do not blindly follow the trend and let them wear glasses at will, so as to avoid adverse effects on their children's eye health.
