Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine while I am trying to conceive? Can both men and women get it?

Dahe.com News: The epidemic prevention and control situation is complex and severe. Only by getting the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible can we build a strong immune barrier. But for couples who are preparing for pregnancy, can they get the COVID-19 vaccine? Can both men and women get it? Let's hear what the experts say.

Wang Huaqing, chief expert on immunization planning at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview with CCTV: "Based on our experience in vaccination, we have also understood the safety of the vaccine. In fact, when preparing for pregnancy, there is no need to consider the impact of the vaccine on pregnancy. Both men and women can be vaccinated."

"Women who are preparing to become pregnant can get the new coronavirus vaccine, and there is no need to postpone pregnancy just because of the new coronavirus vaccine. There is no problem for men not to get the new coronavirus vaccine because they are preparing to become pregnant." Liu Furong from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University introduced that the results of preliminary clinical trials showed that 28 days after completing the full course of vaccination, more than 90% of the population can produce antibodies, so the earlier the vaccine is administered, the more at ease it will be.

Liu Furong reminded that in addition to vaccination, couples planning to have a baby should also develop a healthy lifestyle, strengthen physical exercise, stick to a regular schedule, ensure adequate sleep, and maintain a healthy mentality; balance nutrition and a reasonable diet; quit smoking and drinking; pay attention to protection and keep warm; avoid gathering; do not go out unless necessary; and take personal protective measures when going out.

The "Technical Guidelines for New Coronavirus Vaccine Vaccination (First Edition)" officially states that pregnant women are among the people who are contraindicated for vaccination. What should you do if you find out that you are pregnant after being vaccinated?

Wang Huaqing said: "According to the information we have learned and some of the basis for the early application of vaccines, if a vaccinated person becomes pregnant, no special medical measures are needed, including termination of pregnancy. This is also an international consensus."

Vaccination is not recommended for pregnant women, but no special measures are required if you become pregnant after vaccination. Is there a contradiction between the two?

"Some vaccines are not given to pregnant women out of caution, but there have been no reports of abnormal conditions in pregnant women or fetuses caused by the vaccines. We will continue to strengthen monitoring in the future," said Wang Huaqing.

In summary, it is okay to get the vaccine when preparing for pregnancy, but it is not recommended when you are pregnant.

Therefore, if you are planning to have a baby, whether you are a man or a woman, getting the vaccine will not affect your plan to have a baby. There is currently no evidence that anything has happened to pregnant women after getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

But to be on the safe side, it is recommended that expectant mothers do not get the vaccine yet!

If you find out you are pregnant after getting the vaccine, you don’t need to worry too much. Just do the appropriate pregnancy checkups.

If you haven't completed all the doses, it is recommended that you continue to take them after giving birth. (Zhang Liguang/Text)
