1. Avoid high sugar intake

You can eat sugar, but you must give up a high-sugar diet. Ling Yiqun and Wu Yan from the Department of Nutrition at the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Fudan University said that long-term high-sugar intake can lead to obesity and insulin resistance, causing oxidative stress, endocrine disorders and immune dysfunction, which in turn increase the risk of tumors.

After a tumor has occurred, cancer cells will use anaerobic glycolysis of sugar as their main energy source, so whether you are an ordinary person or a cancer patient, you should control your intake of added sugar.

2. Avoid high-fat foods

People should not eat too much greasy food. A study published in the journal Cell found that a high-fat diet is like a "fuel" for intestinal cancer. Mice with APC mutations (a common mutated gene in colorectal cancer) develop benign growths called adenomas. Adenomas are common in the human intestine and are removed during colonoscopy. It usually takes decades for adenomas to grow and turn into malignant adenocarcinomas. However, the adenomas of these mice quickly turned cancerous after consuming a high-fat diet.

3. Avoid sitting for long periods of time

Some people seem to spend their days sitting for long periods of time at work or sleeping; they never walk when they can take a car, and never climb stairs when they can take an elevator... However, Chen Xiaobing, chief physician of the Department of Internal Medicine at Henan Cancer Hospital, said that after studying more than 17,000 male patients for 20 years, the University of Vermont in the United States found that those who exercise regularly have a 68% lower chance of developing lung cancer and a 38% lower chance of developing colorectal cancer than those who do not exercise. The world's top journal "Cell" confirmed that exercise can also directly kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

These evidences show that regular, sustained physical activity can prevent certain parts of cancer, such as exercise can reduce the incidence of colon cancer and estrogen-related cancers (breast cancer and endometrial cancer) are already confirmed. It is certain that moving away from a sedentary lifestyle is indeed effective in reducing the incidence of cancer.

4. Quit tobacco

Smokers have undoubtedly become "cancer candidates"! The more smokers smoke, the longer they smoke, and the younger they start smoking, the higher the risk and probability of lung cancer.

5. Stop drinking alcohol

In 2021, the Ministry of Science and Technology’s official website published an article titled “A Canadian study shows that some cancers are related to drinking.” The article cited a study in the authoritative journal The Lancet Oncology, which confirmed that alcohol is a Class 1 carcinogen defined by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the leading cause of cancer worldwide, and that the number of cancers will rise further as alcohol consumption increases.

6. Avoid hot food

Xiang Jiaqing, chief physician of thoracic surgery at the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Fudan University, pointed out that Chinese food is very distinctive. Food like hot pot is relatively hot and can easily damage the esophageal mucosa, which requires repeated repairs. Long-term cycles can easily lead to cancer.

7. Avoid strong foods

A high-salt diet is closely related to the occurrence of gastric cancer. Sun Hao, director of the Gastrointestinal Tumor Center of Chongqing Cancer Hospital, said that the World Health Organization stipulates that the daily salt intake per person is 6 grams. If this amount is exceeded, the high osmotic fluid in the salt will damage the gastric mucosa, which can easily induce gastric cancer in the long run.

8. Stop staying up late

Li Zhong, chief physician of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Dongzhimen Hospital of China University of Chinese Medicine, pointed out that staying up late for a long time will put people in a sub-healthy state, providing favorable conditions for the generation, proliferation and spread of cancer cells. Because at night, the human body produces a kind of melatonin, which has antioxidant properties that can protect the body's oxidants from damaging deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). At the same time, it can also inhibit the production of another hormone, estrogen, which can promote the growth and development of certain tumors. Most women with a high incidence of breast cancer work in night shifts.

9. Avoid overwork

The human body is like a spring. If the pressure is too great and it is stretched for too long, problems will easily occur. Li Junling, chief physician of the Department of Oncology at the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said that to prevent cancer, one should not overwork. In the past, the lung cancer patients I saw were all older than me; later, their ages began to be similar to mine, and some patients were even younger than me.

This change made me start to pay attention to the common characteristics of lung cancer patients. I found that many patients were extremely tired, had a lot of work pressure, had poor sleep, stayed up late, and had other bad lifestyle habits, such as heavy smoking.
