[Rabies Science Series] What is the rabies exposure level?

This is the 3768th article of Da Yi Xiao Hu

The story of the Trojan Horse is well known to everyone. Today's content is somewhat similar to this story. When human skin and mucous membranes are intact, the rabies virus cannot directly enter the human body.

If the skin and mucous membranes are damaged (exposed), the rabies virus may take advantage of the opportunity to enter.

Definition of exposure

Rabies exposure refers to being bitten, scratched, or licked [contact method] on the mucous membrane or broken skin by a rabid, suspected rabid, or rabies host animal whose health cannot be confirmed [type of offending animal], or open wounds or mucous membranes [contact sites] coming into contact with the saliva or tissue of an animal that may be infected with the rabies virus [contact method].
Principles of post-exposure management

Exposure levels are divided according to the degree of damage, and different exposures correspond to different post-exposure disposal principles.

Level I exposure requires only cleaning of the exposed area and no special treatment is required.

Level II exposure requires wound treatment + rabies vaccine (special population + rabies protein)

Level III exposure requires the use of all three at the same time, namely wound treatment + rabies vaccine + rabies protein.
