"Gain of function" has always been a sensitive word. "Gain of function" refers to helping an organism develop new "capabilities" or "functions" by modifying its pathogenicity, infectivity or host range. In layman's terms, it means enhancing the toxicity of the virus.

A series of safety incidents in 2014 prompted the US government to halt "gain of function" research because of the risks of this research, but the ban was lifted in 2017.

In this study, scientists collected blood samples from 959 people who voluntarily participated in early lung cancer screening between September 2019 and March 2020. They found that antibodies against the new coronavirus were found in 11% of the samples, including samples collected in September 2019 and February 2020. More than half of the samples positive for new coronavirus antibodies came from Lombardy in northern Italy.

The World Health Organization then intervened and the samples were sent to laboratories in Italy and the Netherlands for retesting using different methods. The two laboratories retested 29 original samples and control samples, and antibodies to the new coronavirus were observed in the original samples.
