Does too much eye mucus mean getting angry? Don’t be fooled, these 5 reasons are more practical

"There is so much eye mucus, it must be caused by inflammation"

When it comes to excessive eye mucus, some people equate it with getting angry. Is it true that excessive eye mucus is equivalent to getting angry? If it is not getting angry, what is the reason?

How does eye mucus come from?

There is a cartilage-like thing in our eyelids called "tarsal plate", in which many meibomian glands are neatly arranged. The gland openings are at the edge of the eyelids, close to the eyelashes. The meibomian glands secrete a liquid like oil continuously.
During the day, these oils protect the eyes. At night, when people fall asleep, the oil is still secreted. The oil accumulated in the morning mixes with the dust that enters the eyes during the day and the impurities in the tears, and runs to the corners of the eyes to form eye mucus.

What is the reason for more eye mucus

People with normal eye problems rarely have eye mucus, or even no eye mucus at all. But some people have eye mucus all over their eyes after waking up. When there is too much eye mucus, it even sticks to the eyelids, making it difficult to open them. Sometimes there is eye mucus during the day. What's going on?

Zhang Jiang, director of the tear duct/eye and nose-related specialist department of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital (Wuhan Aier Eye Hospital Hubei General Hospital), explains "Why does the baby have a lot of eye mucus and tears?"

1. Neonatal dacryocystitis. After the baby is born, parents should pay special attention to the amount of eye mucus. If there is still eye mucus one week after birth, accompanied by excessive tears and red and swollen eyes, the baby should be taken to an ophthalmologist for examination as soon as possible.

2. Tear duct obstruction. This is common in middle-aged and elderly people. Tear duct obstruction causes tears for no reason, excessive eye mucus, etc. It is easy to recur and worsen in autumn and winter.

3. Eye irritation. In smog weather, excessive dust, etc., the eyes are exposed to such a heavily polluted environment for a long time, and are easily irritated by dust, bacteria, etc., or if you rub your eyes without paying attention to hygiene, bacteria will enter your eyes and cause infection, which may cause a lot of eye mucus.

4. Eye fatigue. Staying up late for a long time, not getting enough sleep, overusing your eyes, and eye fatigue will increase the amount of eye mucus.

5. Other eye diseases: conjunctivitis, keratitis, dry eyes, trachoma, etc. These diseases can cause increased eye secretions.
