In biological taxonomy, they are the same species as shrimps, lobsters, and hermit crabs. Common crabs include swimming crabs, deep-sea swimming crabs, blue crabs, and Chinese mitten crabs.

A small number of crabs live entirely in fresh water, often under rocks in mountain streams, while a few, such as land crabs, are adapted to life on land, burrowing in moist mud holes.

Most crabs are omnivorous, some are carnivorous, such as swimming crabs, which can prey on fish, shrimps and mollusks. A few crabs, such as window crabs, scrape or filter algae and organic debris.
