How to prevent and control myopia in children?

Dai Hongbin, director of strabismus, amblyopia and pediatric ophthalmology at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University (Wuhan Aier Eye Hospital Hubei Headquarters), summarized the detailed and scientific precautions for eye use.

1. Try to choose electronic products with larger screens

If conditions permit, try to choose electronic products with larger screens. The recommended order of priority is TV, computer, tablet, and finally mobile phone. It is best to play courses or entertainment programs on TV or project them onto a large screen, and watch them at a distance of more than 3 meters to avoid prolonged close eye use.

2. Develop the correct reading and writing posture habits

Sit in a good posture, with shoulders flat, waist straight and chest held high. The reading and writing posture should be "one fist, one foot and one inch": one fist: the distance between the chest and the table is one fist (the distance of a fist); one foot: the distance between the eyes and the book is one foot (33 cm); one inch: the distance between the fingers holding the pen and the tip of the pen should be one inch. Pay attention to using desks and chairs that match your height, which is conducive to maintaining a correct sitting posture.

3. Look far into the distance

Try to limit the time of watching online classes and doing homework to 30-40 minutes each time, and then take a 5-10 minute break to let your eyes adjust and relax. But please note that resting is not watching TV or playing games. It is best to look out the window and not let your eyes continue to be in a tense state of looking at close objects.

4. Exercise outdoors as much as possible

The high intensity of sunlight during outdoor sports can shrink the pupil and deepen the mirror image, thereby increasing the clarity of objects and slowing the progression of myopia. Outdoor activities will allow you to look into the distance more often, allowing your eyes to relax, which is a good way to protect your eyesight.

Advice for parents: Pay attention to your child’s eye use

1. If you see your child squinting, go to the hospital immediately

Parents should observe the details of their children's daily lives. If they see their children squinting when watching TV or looking at something, it means that their eyes cannot adjust themselves to see distant objects clearly. At this time, they must take their children to see a doctor. Director Dai Hongbin recommends that a refractive development file be established for the child, and that they go to the hospital for mydriasis and eye examinations every 6 months to detect refractive abnormalities early.

2. Pay attention to problems such as strabismus and amblyopia

In addition to squinting, parents also need to pay attention to strabismus and amblyopia. Strabismus is divided into esotropia and exotropia. Children with strabismus are prone to refractive abnormalities such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. If necessary, they need to wear glasses to correct it. If strabismus does not improve, surgical treatment is required.

Amblyopia is a condition in which children have abnormal visual experience during their visual development period (0-8 years old), resulting in the best corrected visual acuity (visual acuity with glasses) of one or both eyes being lower than that of normal children. The period before the age of 8 is a critical period for visual development, during which the treatment of amblyopia is effective. If amblyopia is not treated or is not treated adequately, permanent vision loss may occur. Therefore, early detection and early treatment are the key to successful treatment of amblyopia.

3. Choose scientific and effective myopia prevention and control methods

If you find that your child has vision problems, you must take him to a professional ophthalmology hospital to find a professional optometrist for a medical optometry examination. If necessary, you need to dilate the pupil for eye examination. If your child already has true myopia, you need to find a professional doctor to fit the right glasses to avoid squinting which accelerates myopia. At the same time, you should change bad eye habits and take care of your eyes.
