Why are the leaves of geraniums yellow? How to remedy the yellowing of geranium leaves

Geranium, also known as hydrangea, is a plant with bright and long blooming flowers. Many people grow one or two pots of it in their gardens. So why do geranium leaves turn yellow? How to remedy the yellowing of geranium leaves? The following editor will explain them one by one, hoping to help you.

Why are the leaves of geraniums yellow?

1. The high temperature and humid environment is very unfavorable for the growth of geraniums. Many geraniums grown outdoors will have yellow leaves in the summer. If not dealt with in time, the yellow leaves will gradually spread to more branches and leaves, and eventually lead to death.

2. Geraniums are not tolerant to moisture and waterlogging. Normally, just keep the soil in the pot slightly moist. If you water it too frequently and keep the soil in a moist state for a long time, the roots will not be able to breathe normally, which can easily cause root rot and the roots will be unable to absorb nutrients, causing the leaves of the plant to turn yellow and fall off.

3. In hot and humid weather, if the maintenance environment is not well ventilated, various pathogens will easily breed in the potting soil, causing the plant to be infected with diseases and cause yellowing of leaves, such as leaf spot disease, chlorosis disease, rot disease, etc.

4. Geraniums should be fertilized lightly. If fertilizer is applied too frequently or too thickly, it may burn the roots, causing root absorption to be blocked. In severe cases, it will cause root rot, and finally the leaves will gradually turn yellow and fall off.

How to remedy the yellowing of geranium leaves

1. Unsuitable maintenance environment

Move the potted plants to a diffuse light environment and strengthen the ventilation of the maintenance environment. In hot weather, spray water on the leaves of the plants every morning and evening. When maintaining outdoors, try to avoid rain. After rain, pour out the accumulated water in the pot in time to avoid root rot.

If the plant has signs of root rot, remove it from the pot promptly, sterilize the roots with 0.2% carbendazim solution, and then repot it in new soil.

2. Excessive watering or long-term water shortage

Usually, you should control the amount of watering properly, and do not let the pot soil be too dry or too wet for a long time. Remove the yellow leaves, keep the pot soil slightly moist, spray water on the leaves of the plant every day to keep them moist, and keep the maintenance environment well ventilated. After a period of maintenance, it will gradually return to normal.

3. Infection

Move it to a well-ventilated location and cut off the yellow leaves. Then prepare some fungicides and spray them on the plant every 7 days or so to kill the germs on the plant.

If the roots are also infected with bacteria and cause rot, you can turn the pot over to clean the rotten parts of the roots, then use 0.2% carbendazim solution to sterilize and disinfect the roots, and then change the soil and replant.

4. Fertilization is too concentrated

When applying fertilizer at other times, you can use clean water to dilute the fertilizer solution. Organic fertilizer should be fully fermented before being used to grow flowers. It is best to water the plants thoroughly after each fertilization to dilute the fertilizer solution to avoid root burn.

If geraniums have already suffered from fertilizer damage, causing root rot and yellow leaves, it is necessary to promptly water the roots with abundant water so that the water flows out of the drainage holes. Fertilizer damage can be effectively alleviated after multiple large-scale root watering.

How to manage newly bought geraniums

There is no need to repot a newly bought plant. The weather is not very warm now. If you want to repot it, you can do so in April or May, but do not disturb the soil in the original pot. It is best to wait until the soil in the pot is dry before repotting it. After repotting, just water it thoroughly.
