Should sweet potatoes be planted as a whole or cut into pieces? When can a sweet potato be eaten?

Sweet potatoes are a common edible crop in rural areas. They can be roasted or processed into sweet potato flour and vermicelli. Sweet potato vines and leaves can be used to cook and are a very popular crop in rural areas. If you don't know whether sweet potatoes should be grown as a whole or cut into pieces, you can take a look at the introduction provided in this article.

Are sweet potatoes grown as a whole or in pieces?

Sweet potatoes are different from potatoes. They can only be planted in one piece. They cannot be cut into pieces. If they are cut into pieces, they will just rot in the ground. Only potatoes can be cut into pieces and planted.

Sweet potato planting steps

1. Select the land. The land for planting sweet potatoes needs to be deep, loose, fertile, and well-ventilated to meet its germination requirements. Deeply dig and plow the land, harrow and level it, make ridges about 1 meter wide, and dig trenches and ridges.

2. Sprinkle manure on the bed surface and let it soak. Manure can increase soil fertility, and most importantly, it can make the bed surface moist, making the soil soft and mellow, so that the sweet potatoes can be pressed into the mud later.

3. Seed selection. After taking the sweet potatoes out of the cellar, select the sweet potatoes of uniform size and without damage, bruises, black spots, or mold on the surface for seeding.

4. Bury the sweet potatoes neatly on the bed surface that has just been covered with manure. Lay the sweet potatoes flat and press them hard into the ground. It is best to press half of the sweet potatoes into the ground and half of them outside. Remember not to insert the sweet potatoes directly into the ground. Keep the sweet potatoes as close together as possible.

5. After the sweet potatoes are buried underground, cover the upper part of the sweet potatoes with fine sand. Make sure to cover all the sweet potatoes and do not leave them exposed.

6. After covering with fine sand, cover it with straw. The straw has the function of heat preservation, which plays the role of heat insulation and cold insulation; secondly, it protects the sand on top from being washed away by rain, so as to avoid the sweet potatoes being exposed and affecting the germination later.

When can I eat the sweet potatoes I planted?

Sweet potato planting must first be done by raising seedlings. The seedlings must be raised in the sweet potato pond before planting. Planting can start around May 1st. I have planted mine for four or five days. This question depends on the specific situation, such as the melon vines and the business situation. Early planting does not necessarily mean high yield. In the past two years, I think those planted later have grown better than those planted earlier. It is not too late to plant now. We generally rarely plant autumn sweet potatoes (planted after harvesting wheat).
