Do azaleas need to be moved indoors in the winter?

Azaleas need to be moved indoors in the winter. The first choice depends on the variety and region. The general potted azalea varieties are not very cold-resistant. When the temperature drops to 5 degrees Celsius, they will stop growing. For safety reasons, it is better to move azaleas indoors in winter.

How to keep azalea alive in winter

Rhododendron is delicate and afraid of sun and cold. It likes semi-shady environment and avoids direct sunlight. The suitable growth temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. It can only grow well in a humid environment, preferably with a relative air humidity of 70% to 90%.

In the north, it should be placed on a sunny and wind-sheltered balcony during the winter. It is best to water it around 10 a.m. to keep the soil moist. Spray the leaves every day to maintain a high air humidity.

It is best to cover the azalea together with the flowerpot with a translucent plastic film, and then poke a few small holes on the top of the film to facilitate ventilation. This will both keep warm and effectively increase the air humidity to meet the growth needs of the azalea.

Do not water too much, rainwater is best, if it is tap water, it is best to wait for two days before watering. In addition, azalea grows slowly in winter, so less fertilizer or no fertilizer should be applied.

Where should azaleas be placed?

The south-facing balcony is the best choice, and it almost does not need to be moved. The east-west balcony only needs to be shaded during the high temperature period in summer. Although the north-facing balcony has scattered light, it is not conducive to flowering for a long time. It can be temporarily moved here for maintenance during the high temperature period in summer. For outdoor maintenance, just place it against the wall. Potted plants in the north need to be brought indoors for maintenance in winter.
