What does syphilis look like?

There are many clinical symptoms of syphilis, which can actually be divided into two types: primary and paroxysmal. Primary refers to the first infection with the virus, which usually lasts about 2 to 10 days from exposure to onset, and it is the critical period. A burning sensation will appear at the affected area, and 3 to 10 red papules in groups will quickly appear on the basis of the erythema, accompanied by itching. The papules will quickly turn into small blisters, which will turn into pustules after 3 to 5 days. After rupture, large areas of erosion and ulcers will occur, which are active and painful, and will eventually heal with scars.

The entire history of primary syphilis can last about 20 days. In men, it is more common in the glans penis, coronal sulcus, urethral opening, male genitals, scrotum, thigh roots and arms. In women, it is more common on the vulva, mons pubis, clitoris, around the anus or in the vagina. In about 90% of patients, viral infection can also invade the cervix, causing increased female secretions or lower abdominal pain, and can be complicated by cervicitis and metritis.

Most patients with syphilis have bilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy. In the middle and late stages, when the inflammation spreads to the urethra and bladder, symptoms such as difficulty urinating, painful urination, frequent urination, and urinary retention may occur in severe cases. In addition, other symptoms may also occur, such as fever, malaise, headache, stiff neck, meningitis and sacral central nervous system function anisocoria.
