Why do I have so little menstruation?

Why do I have so little menstruation?

Similar to menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea also needs to be distinguished whether there is an organic cause. If there is no organic problem, there is no need to worry too much about multifunctional problems. So why do we have so little menstruation?

1. Organic disease. The so-called organic problem generally refers to the location where menstruation is caused - the uterine wall has been damaged, resulting in reduced menstruation. Common causes include intrauterine adhesions after abortion, endometrial tuberculosis, or secondary to hysterectomy due to reduced volume of the uterine wall resulting in insufficient menstrual flow. Intrauterine adhesions caused by abortion are a relatively common problem. Some women may even experience amenorrhea due to adhesions after an abortion. This is also known as Asherman's syndrome in clinical medicine. It is usually caused by the damage of the dermis of the uterine wall by equipment during the abortion. Intrauterine adhesions can be confirmed by ultrasound, iodized oil hysterography or hysteroscopy, and can also be treated by hysteroscopy. Endometrial tuberculosis can destroy the functional layer of the uterine wall, resulting in scanty menstruation. Such problems are generally irreversible, and infertility caused by uterine wall tuberculosis is difficult to treat.

2. Oral hormones. After taking female birth control pills or using a contraceptive ring containing growth hormone, oligomenorrhea may also occur, which is related to the decrease in estrogen.

3. Ovarian decline. In addition to organic problems, scanty menstruation is generally related to ovarian function. During adolescence or menopause, hypomenorrhea may occur due to imperfect pituitary-ovarian axis function or ovarian failure.

4. Endocrine abnormalities. Abnormal functions of other endocrine organs in a woman's body, such as low thyroid hormone, elevated prolactin, high glargine insulin levels, or high androgen levels, may also cause abnormalities in the pituitary-ovarian axis and result in decreased menstrual volume.

5. Lose weight. Excessive exercise and weight loss can reduce the body fat rate, which is also a cause of decreased menstrual volume or even amenorrhea.

6. Related to spirit and mentality. In addition to the above problems, the decrease in menstrual volume in most women is related to spirit and mentality. For example, when there is exam pressure or emotional excitement and expectation of something happening, the anxious spirit inhibits the secretion of growth hormone in the hypothalamus and pituitary, which secondarily causes the decrease in the secretion of uterine ovarian estrogen and also causes the decrease in menstrual volume.

Treatment of oligomenorrhea varies from person to person

For multi-functional oligomenorrhea, the first thing to do is to find the cause. If it is a problem with other functional axes in the human body, corresponding treatment should be carried out for other causes. For example, thyroid hormone supplementation is needed in the case of hypothyroidism. If it is related to mental and psychological factors, it can usually be recovered after the external causes are eliminated. If no abnormalities are found after examination, there is no need to worry too much. Oligomenorrhea will not cause adverse effects on the body. The incidence of infertility in women with oligomenorrhea is no different from that of women with normal menstrual flow, so special treatment is generally not required.
