When is the NT test?

NT is the abbreviation of nuchal translucency, which refers to the nuchal transparent layer, that is, the maximum thickness between the skin and subcutaneous soft tissue at the sagittal level of the fetal cervical vertebrae. The purpose of nuchal translucency examination is to diagnose chromosomal disorders and detect fetal abnormalities caused by various reasons at an early stage of pregnancy. So, when is the NT check?

The NT test refers to a nuchal translucency scan and is a way to assess whether a baby may have Down syndrome. The NT test is usually performed at 11-13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. It is mainly done by ultrasound scanning. Generally, the doctor will scratch the pregnant woman's abdomen for B-ultrasound, but the position of the baby and the uterus must also be checked.

What are the common questions about NT inspection?

1. NT (nuchal translucency scanner) examination is a B-ultrasound examination item, which does not require blood tests. Eating and drinking water will not easily affect the test results, so there is no need to fast before the test.

2. Because the fetus is too small to observe the nuchal translucency before 11 weeks of pregnancy, and the fetus gradually grows and develops after 14 weeks of pregnancy, it may absorb unnecessary blood from the nuchal translucency and affect the test results. Therefore, it is best for pregnant women to do NT between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy to avoid inaccurate test results.

3. It is best to make an appointment for NT in advance. Generally, you can start making an appointment with the hospital 11 weeks before pregnancy to facilitate the schedule. Do not make a reservation after 13 weeks of pregnancy to avoid long queues. Doing NT beyond the gestational age will affect the success rate of the test results.
