What does high risk mean?

A high risk of Down syndrome screening means that the baby is at a higher risk of suffering from Down syndrome. In fact, for babies who are identified as high-risk through Down syndrome screening, after further DNA testing, the probability of being diagnosed with Down syndrome is not high, and generally will not exceed 10%. During the Down syndrome screening process, the concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin, fetal alpha protein and free estriol in the pregnant woman's blood need to be measured. These test results may be affected by external factors and may lead to errors.

After pregnant women are tested positive for Down syndrome, they are very worried. In fact, this value does not mean that there is definitely something wrong with the child. If the Down syndrome screening risk is relatively high, further examination of the fetus can be performed through amniocentesis or fur cell counting to find out whether there is any problem with the child.

Pregnant women do not need to worry too much after being diagnosed with a high risk of Down syndrome, because the results of blood tests are not very accurate. They can only be used to make a diagnosis of a fetus with Down syndrome. Especially for some older mothers or those who suffer from viral infections after pregnancy, it is very easy for the fetus to develop Down syndrome.

Women before and after pregnancy must maintain a good mental state, and they must actively carry out various examinations before and after pregnancy. If there are some pets at home, try to avoid them during pregnancy to avoid affecting the health of pregnant women and also having a great impact on the health of the fetus.

What is the reason for the high risk of Down syndrome screening?

The Down syndrome screening results show high risk, and the more important reason is that there is an abnormality in the sex chromosomes. In layman's terms, it means that the pregnant woman has an extra sex chromosome, which is largely related to the pregnant woman's old age and the aging of her egg cells. When the Down screening results show high risk, it means that the fetus has a higher incidence rate, but it does not mean that the baby will definitely get the disease. Pregnant women should undergo further examination and have amniocentesis as soon as possible.

Down syndrome screening can only check the probability of having a disease, but it cannot confirm 100% whether the fetus is sick. Based on the amniocentesis test, it can be determined whether the fetus has Down syndrome. After the amniocentesis test, pregnant women can take effective measures based on the test results.

After the amniocentesis test, if it is confirmed that the fetus has Down syndrome, the pregnant woman should terminate the pregnancy immediately to prevent the birth of a defective child. In fact, the miscarriage rate of babies with Down syndrome is very high, reaching 60%, which is a natural result of replacement.
