Risks of Nipple Surgery

Risks of Nipple Surgery

Women cannot accept any flaws in their breasts, but some women have inverted nipples due to poor breast development or acquired reasons. This situation often makes women very inferior. In addition to the unsightly breasts, it also affects breastfeeding. Although nipple surgery can restore the nipple to normal, there are risks. In order to avoid this, in addition to post-operative care, regular breast checks should be conducted.

Is Nipple Surgery Risky?

The main treatment for inverted nipples is surgery. Primary (congenital) inverted nipple can be treated conservatively first. For example, use a breast pump to apply negative pressure to the nipple, or perform manual traction. For severe cases or those that are ineffective with suction and traction, surgical treatment should be performed. Secondary nipple inversion is often caused by breast cancer and should be diagnosed first. Invagination caused by inflammation, trauma and surgical scars should be treated accordingly, and plastic surgery should be performed later.

The surgical method for correcting inverted nipples is simple, with little trauma and quick recovery. The stitches are usually removed in a week and only oral anti-inflammatory drugs are required for 3-5 days. Although the operation of correcting inverted nipple is simple, to ensure the success of the operation and the postoperative effect, you must choose an experienced doctor. Experienced doctors can develop appropriate surgical plans for patients, reduce surgical risks, and ensure that the operation proceeds smoothly.

What harm does inverted nipple do to women?

1. Impact on breastfeeding

Whether the nipples are flat, inverted or everted, they will make breastfeeding inconvenient. If the nipples develop abnormally, especially inverted, it will affect the newborn's sucking and make normal breastfeeding difficult. In addition, due to inverted nipples, newborns cannot hold the nipples, milk cannot be sucked out, and newborns are prone to dehydration. Patients with inverted nipples will have larger breasts due to pregnancy, and milk secretion will make the breasts swell further, which will make the nipple inversion worse, and the mother will also give up breastfeeding for her own reasons.

2. Affects the beauty of breasts

Inverted nipples will affect the beauty of women's breasts, causing them to lose their beautiful curves, which will have an adverse effect on their overall image.

3. Affects sexual life

The nipple is also one of the female sexual sensitive points, and the stimulation of the nipple can also make women reach orgasm. Inverted nipples can make it difficult for women to obtain effective sexual stimulation and may even affect men's sexual desire.

4. Affect the patient's mental health

If a woman suffers from inverted nipples, she usually feels anxious, lacks confidence, and worries excessively, which seriously affects her mental health.

5. Affects the baby's health and women's postpartum recovery

Inverted nipples prevent babies from getting enough breast milk, which will affect their physical development and health. For new mothers, postpartum recovery will also be affected.

6. Cause diseases such as nipple areola inflammation and breast inflammation

Long-term inverted nipple will compress the lymphatic vessels under the areola, causing lymphatic flow obstruction and exudation of collagen tissue. In addition, inverted nipples prevent the epidermal cells and areola secretions shed from the nipple surface from being cleared away in time, which in turn irritates the nipple skin and causes inflammation of the nipple and areola. Severe cases can lead to mucosal formation of the inward skin accompanied by eczema, and some patients may experience erosion, bleeding, and chronic inflammation. The mammary duct is connected to the inverted area, and the inflammation spreads into the mammary gland, causing reverse infection and mastitis. If not corrected promptly, long-term stimulation will cause the mammary ducts to shrink due to chronic inflammation, making the inversion more serious and forming a vicious cycle.

To avoid the risks of inverted nipple surgery, you need to learn postoperative care:

(1) After the operation, be careful to avoid lifting your body upwards. If the situation is special, you can bandage your chest to ensure proper wound care.

(2) Sexual intercourse should be avoided within half a month after surgery to prevent wound cracking due to sexual stimulation.

(3) After the operation, you can take some vitamin E appropriately to help the wound heal smoothly. If you feel that the wound has redness, swelling, exudation and other problems, you must go to the hospital for physical therapy in time.
