What to do if you have old cervical laceration?

What to do if you have old cervical laceration?

Old cervical lacerations are usually caused by birth injuries. Lacerations are more common on both sides of the cervix. Mild lacerations can mostly heal naturally, but if severe cervical lacerations are not repaired in time, fibrous tissue scars will appear after the lacerations heal on their own, and the external os of the cervix will become loose. So, many people still don’t know what to do with old cervical lacerations. What should we do with old cervical lacerations? Let’s take a look at it next.

1. Clinical manifestations

1. Increased vaginal discharge or bleeding during sexual intercourse

Due to the eversion of the cervical mucosa, it is easy to get infected, causing congestion and edema of the cervix, increased secretions, and purulent or mucous leucorrhea. The irritation of a large amount of leucorrhea can lead to vaginitis and vulvitis, causing vulvar itching. Examination revealed ectropion of the cervical mucosa, congestion and fragility of the tissue, and bleeding during sexual intercourse.

2. Lumbar pain

When cervicitis is severe, the inflammation spreads along the sacral ligament and cardinal ligament, forming pelvic connective tissue inflammation, resulting in lumbar and sacral pain and lower abdominal distension.

3. Habitual abortion

If a laceration occurs at the internal os of the cervix, the submucosal muscle fibers and connective tissue will separate, leading to relaxation of the internal os of the cervix and cervical insufficiency, resulting in habitual abortion, which often occurs during the second trimester.

4. Intrauterine device

Old cervical laceration

Due to the relaxation of the cervix, the intrauterine device is easy to fall out.

5. Gynecological examination

The external opening of the cervix is shaped like a fish's mouth, the anterior and posterior lips of the cervix are everted, the cervical mucosa is turned outward, and it is easy to bleed during examination. The cervix is hard on palpation and the cervical opening is loose.

2. Drug treatment

If the infection is obvious and the symptoms are severe, antibiotics should be used for anti-infection treatment. Or traditional Chinese medicine can clear away heat and dampness, detoxify and reduce inflammation, and promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis.

3. Surgical treatment

1. Minor lacerations can usually heal naturally without causing any harm to the body. For those with ectropion of the cervical mucosa, repair surgery or cervical conization can be performed, but improper suturing may cause infertility, so it is rarely used for those who want to have children.

2. For habitual abortion caused by cervical insufficiency, cervical cerclage is performed at 14 to 16 weeks of pregnancy.

3. If you are older and do not want to get pregnant again, and your cervical erosion has been treated, then there is no need to repair old cervical lacerations.

4. Prevention

1. After natural and assisted delivery, routinely check for cervical lacerations. If severe lacerations are found, they should be repaired promptly.

2. Take contraceptive measures and reduce intrauterine operations. During artificial abortion, the cervix should be dilated one by one according to the serial number of the cervical dilation instrument. Do not skip any numbers and do not use excessive force. When the pregnancy is advanced, drugs to dilate the cervix are used before surgery, and surgery is performed after the cervix is dilated.
